I got my new horse about 6 months ago. He used to be a briliant show horse and was at hoys but was then used in a riding school. He is really dead to the leg (i think because he was used for dressage and has been worked in sand paddocks A LOT) What can i do to make him enjoy work and respond to my leg? Thanks

Does he like jumping? Incorporating jumps into your schooling can liven things up a little.

Sounds as if he is totally bored of going round and round in circles. Can you get some more variety into his life? Hacking/ hunting/ xc? Even hacking does not have to be a slop along, you can do plenty of schooling whilst out and about.

lots of transitions can help make them more sharp to your leg. and keeping his work varied so he doesnt get bored and dead to your leg...i.e. hacking, hunting, xc schooling? sj... and within your flatwork, do lots of transitions, maybe some polework, leg yielding, small circle leg yielding out to a larger circle...just lots of exercises to keep him thinking and concentrating.

do you ride in spurs?? they could help xxx

Hunting, lots of

Once he's going forward and enjoys himself, he'll get more sensitive to the leg.

yes he likes jumping but is really bad at it!
He used to hunt but i've never been hunting and im just learning to jump. We do ride in the fields and do some hacking on the roads but it doesnt seem to be helping
