I have had my horse Max for 4 months now I had him on loan and recently bought him. He is my perfect horse in most ways but he can be a bit shall we say challenging to catch. Myself and one of the yard managers never usually have a problem it is everyone else who struggles but on Sunday and tonight when it has been absolutely chucking it down he has really played me up!

It is a little frustrating but I just use it as an opportunity to practice join up however I think it is peculiar that he doesn't want to come in when nearly every other horse on the yard is desperate to! Just wondered if anyone else has a strange horse too?!

Incidentally tonight when I finally caught him I just gave him a carrot and checked him over and then let him go :)

Good idea. If one does not want to come in. Leave one out :D

I had one like this. Brought all of them in. One would not be caught but neighed for the others. So, went back to catch, he ran off again. I walked away. He neighed and paced the fence. I went back, he still ran away. So I thought, sod you then. See you in the morning.

He hadn't paced the fence as much as I thought he would but I don't think he ventured far from the gate. never had a problem after that. Ever.

I think he's trying to tell you something! Lol! My girl prefer to be out whatever the weather. It was bucketing down yesterday and every other horse on the yard was in but she stayed out. She likes it that way. I think we sometimes forget that horses are horses and whilst some have been humanised to the point where they like to be wrapped up in cotton wool, some just prefer to be horses which means they aren't afraid of the elements. I would just leave him out if you can:).

You have probably tried this but...

If he moves away from you out of his choice you make him move on out of yours, if he tries to stop and eat move him on again and again. This usually has worked in the past and has only taken about 6/7 'goes' to get the horse to come in or wait and be caught. Mind you, this wasn't a persistent offender.

Sorry if this was basic, only thing I could think might help...

The irony is he has been living out 24/7 since the 1st of May and I had only intended to catch him and check him over which I do at least twice a week so he doesn't relate being caught with always being worked. The YM who can't catch him left him out one night in the winter it didn't make much difference he is well 'Ard lol! Billie1007 were you watching me? That's exactly what I did on Sunday and tonight so hopefully if I persist he'll eventually get the message!

He is just trying to show me nobody's perfect I reckon :)

I too have very odd horses but I have the opposite!! Mine are more than happy to come in whatever the weather (particularly wussy WB 'big hoss') although baby hoss will stay out, he isn't fussed either way!

Seriously,it can be boiling hot and mine would still happily come in after half an hour!!!! if its the wet nasty stuff they would come in after 10 minutes if i let them (I don't BTW! they are made to stay out lol)
