i happened to say my mare tonight wasnt what i call pretty (shes not butt ugly!!) but shes just brown and bland (it was within a convo)

she has a fantastic personality and shes safe - thats why i bought her - not on looks....

but apparantly me saying that didnt go down well with someone (i own the horse)!... lol.

Do you think your horses are pretty/handsome??

i did find it highly amusing someone took offense to me calling my horse "ok but not thatttt pretty"....":D

I think my part loan mare is absolutely stunning - she has this wild look in her eyes, and when her ears are forwards and her forelock is half over her star and half over her eyes, she just looks so pretty. Especially in summer when all her dapples are out and her socks are shiny white too. I know I'm biast but there's other people on the yard who have said it too! :) I know people who have said their horses aren't exactly pretty though, and I just don't think they're as pretty as Kel. Its true, why buy an insane dangerous horse because its beautiful to look at?

see mine is just plain brown (passport says brown) shes changed now in winter has nice "ginger" eyebrows/muzzle - shes quite pretty but very boring - but i love every bone in her body :)

shes a cracking mare, totally honest and i wouldnt trade her for the world... but not that pretty bless her :)

thank god she cant understand what i said :D lol!

I actually do think my 2 are pretty. However like the Chinese proverb says: There is only one pretty child in the world, and every mother has it.

I have said many times that my WB is a bit ugly. I get told off a lot for it. It is most likely because I don't normally 'do chestnuts or white faces' and of course he has both lol

But so far he is proving to be amazingly good so who cares

I think as owners we can be over critical (or very honest!) If your horse does what you want of it why worry!
I breed and have seen lovely foals turn into the most plug ugly yearlings and two year olds. I have one I called Bugly (b****y ugly) and as a four year old its turned into a swan!
If they make up for their looks in other ways ie manners, reliability, and performance its worth all the prettiness in the world.
I have known some real stunners that were a real nightmare!

matrix is gorgeous. i am highly biased, but have been told by many people and a number of strangers. however, he is also pretty difficult, and a handful- so not everyones ideal pony, though of course i love him to bits :D
my beloved cloud isnt exactly what you would call "pretty" in a classic way. shes neither light nor cob, she hasnt got great conformation either.
but to me, she is stunning. i love her thick creamy tail, the way she holds it like an arab, her big gentle eyes, and her blue markings. so i really dont care if shes not "pretty" because to me shes just perfect and i think shes totally gorgeous.
now i'm near to losing her, i appreaciate her for what she is, and i would swap any number of stunning horses just to have her :( i dont want any other.

My horse has a very sweet, kind face and I do think he looks more handsome now he's had his beard clipped off, but I wouldn't say he's a really stunning beautiful horse. Obviously I completely adore him though, so I couldn't care less if he had four eyes and ears stuck on his chin - he is my boy and I wouldn't change him for the world. He definitely puts me in mind of a loveable children's cartoon character rather than a Hollywood hunk though. :D

Well I said to a friend on friday that my old mare looks just like a mule in the winter :D - they were quite shocked at me too :) Shes rediculously hairy (horse, not friend lol) Its not just her cushings, she always has sprouted hair massively. In summer she looks quite good, but is a little uninteresting really as she is, well, just brown :)

I tell her she's beautiful though so she's blissfully unaware that she looks a right scruffy old nag for 6 months of the year!

Forgot to add...her confirmation is crap (she's a rescue) and sometimes she KNOWS she's pretty...can be a handful but wouldn't trade her for anything!!

Here she is at the start of winter.....

(and got to admit a few weeks ago, before starting on her Cushings meds she did look a little well...scruffy. But her coat's coming on beautifully now with the meds :)

I think Badger is quite handsome in a work man like sort of way:

Think Caffrey is too (bay at front):

But not exactly stunning. Didn't buy them for their prettiness though, horses have many other qualities than how they look. :)

starbucks - hit the nail on the head theree!

i think people tend to think (on my yard anyhow) their horse is stunning etc.... yes they might be (to them) however i can rely on mine not to ditch me whenever she feels like it lol

When i was viewing horses i was very funny about "im not viewing ugly horses".... the one i bought was very plain jane but very very good :)

My chestnut TB mare is a cracker. She has fabulous conformation and is a really good example of the NH type. I couldn't tell you how many non horsey people comment on her when we are out on hacks (although they usually call her a 'him' so I'd say she is handsome rather than pretty) Beautiful is the word most used and it makes me very proud of her. It also reminds me how lucky I am to have such a lovely looking mare.

I think my little man is absolutly gorgeous. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I also think my 2 daughters are the most beautiful girls ever born x

my brown horse is very plain and workmanlike. I call him ugly all the time because compared to my filly and previous mare he looks like a slapped behind. A couple of the girls tell me off for being so horrible about him but it's not like he understands. If I treat him well and you treat yours well who's blooming business is it anyway!

I appreciate him because he is very good at being a horse. He is safe and sensible to ride but has some pop in him too. I like a pretty horse but he has more to offer than just looks.

Some people think he is good looking, he is just plain compared to what else I usually have.

And i'm aware I'm no oil painting myself don't worry!

I think my mare is very pretty, and I'm lucky that her teperment is very good for a mare and she has such caracter..But i didnt buy her for her looks...I have had horses and ponies in the past who have not been my idea of pretty but i loved them all the same

My mare isn't a pretty mare.

She is bay with no white on her at all, just a few whorls for markings. I would describe her as a "good looking" horse (when she's not fat like she is at the moment!) but not a "pretty" horse.

Mine is good looking (and he knows it :D ). People do comment on his handsomeness a lot, and I also get remarks at competitions etc that he has 'presence'- it is lovely to hear, as obviously I reckon he's gorgeous, and it's nice to hear that other people share my view! However, he might not be some people's cup of tea (TB haters? :p) or just not what some people would call anything special, and I wouldn't mind. I like him :)

There are shy gentle horses, worried nervous horses, comic horses, bold as brass take on the world horses, gormless muddle-headed horses, clever horses. All beautiful, & all needing a human being who will think them the very best horse in the whole universe.

(With apologies to Pam Brown, who wrote the original version of the above in relation to kittens).

Beauty of course is in the eye of the beholder, however it's not everything.
As soon as a I saw Obie I KNEW I wanted him. He's an unusual colour, and has the most gorgeous head. He barged out of a field today and I was so cross with him, but as he was galloping around the field he's escaped into I kept thinking.... my God boy, you're so so naughty but my God you're so so beautiful!

The thing is you can't actually say outright if you think someones horse is a bit of a moose :D

There have been posts on here of some, ahem, not so good looking nags, yet people seem to praise them. Alittle bit too much me thinks ;)

Saying that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that.
