My horse keeps jumping out of the field :(

Whilst this is very convenient for bring ins, as it means he will jump in straight to the yard, I am worried he will do himself/another horse/the fencing a damage.

How do I stop it? He doesnt mind what it is, single thread electric (the tallest one you can get) post and rail, five bar gates :( He just trots and pops :(

He will pop into whatever field he has a fancy too, have a chat with a horse, trot to the fence, jump it, have another chat, maybe a groom, and jump out, or into another field.

Any ideas? Short of tethering him gypsy style?

My old and stiff pony has been doing this for years! The only way I can stop her is by attaching electric fence posts to the fence so the electrified tape is at least 6 foot high. Then I put a tape below this AND put full height electrified tape each side of the fence (hope this makes sense!). I also put an electrified tape above the gate - again by attaching electric fence posts to the fence. This keeps her in! Like you I am worried about her injuring herself, not to mention visiting the neighbours or causing an accident. Also jumping into a frozen yard does not sound sensible. I have a friend whose horse jumped out a lot and the other horses started to copy. Another friend had this problem and hung strips of plastic on the fence - it worked! Re above reply - my old stiff 14'2 pony would jump the gate easily!

If he is out alone is he just lonely? Try giving him some toys and treats in his paddock to keep him entertained. He may just always want to do it so yeah as the picture above mega high fencing!! Sounds like he has good scope tho on a positive!!

Nope he is out with the mares, as he kept jumping in with them so we moved him, he now jumps into wherever takes his fancy :(

We do need post and rail like that!!

If he's alone, he's bored and needs company. I have no doubt my boy would be through the fence if he didn't have company in his field on a long term basis.

ditto the idea of attatching leccy fence posts to the existing fence to make it taller...

Hi R2R,
Sorry but I have spilt all my tea over my keyboard tittering at ur super scopey social butterfly gelding. Maybe he's some sort of equine gigilo? :O
As the others have said-electrify everything...it works for me!!
On the plus side he sounds like a super jumper/hunter/puissance cross country horse u lucky thing!
