My "gelding" keeps raping other horses. He has always been a bit riggy, but has gone rampant now - trying to climb over stable doors, and going through fencing to get to mares. He is actually OK with them in company, but is very mare happy, if you know what I mean.

I had asked the vet to test him before but the vet told me as he wasnt actively rampant he was probably just a bargey git.

At risk of sounding crude, today he was "pumping" my friends mare, who he had got in with. He was locked on and it was full blown sex. He has also displayed vicious tendancies towards my other gelding if a mare pays attention to him, or comes into his territory.

I have called the vet, who no doubt will test him for being a rig. I was wondering what the implications of him being a rig actually are?

Help!!

The gelding at a previous yard was like this - test for a rig but def not - he just liked mares! He was a big 17.2 HW hunter too, so not something I wanted constantly on top of my mare! Or trying to kill my gelding.

He went onto Rig calm by global herbs and it worked. It is expensive for a big horse (by body weight) but they can often be weaned off to a low level, and it certainly worked for this gelding.

I think......we should intorude him to OH's mare. She is a total slag and unfortunately my geldings are gay. Well, most likely not....but they are just not interested in her at all, despite some outrageous displays of affection and general minge flashing.:D

Oh he is not fussy. She wouldnt have to wink twice (at either end) and he would be on and up :)

How old is he?

He is 5 (today, actually)

He was cut as a three year old (so i am told) - I put it down to him being cut late at first, but surely the hormones should have calmed down after 18 months?

Did he display this sort of behaviour last year?, or did you not actually own him back then.

Is he dropping weight?

If he's actually trying to cover mares (actually entering them) and they are taking an interest in him more so than other geldings or you can use him as tease and has become aggresive with the other geldings then it would be a good idea to have him tested.

The mares love him. He is actually "entering them" as in, he gets a stiffy, puts it in, and pumps (!!!!)

He was in the field all last summer, it was all geldings, though he was "excitable" around mares. I mentioned it to the vet and was told to see how it goes.

He has gone rampant though, this year!!

He has trashed his stable trying to barge out to get to the mares. He is not dropping weight - but is on 2 feeds a day, hayledge, and spring grass

Sounds a bit like my old horse only he was cut when he was 10, so all the behaviour was set.
I had difference circumstances but it sounds like a test would be good and the stuff someone suggested might be worth a try if nothing else works. I had mine on regumate but he used to go over it after awhile.

This may be a numpty question but if he is a rig and he was 'in' the mares could he get them in foal or not?

I think rigs are 'jaffas' (seedless!) aren't they?

I would get him tested as soon as so you can do something about it, if he is a rig, otherwise he'll be a danger not only to himself but other horses around him, it may just be his age and the fact that he's never been with the mares before so he's getting a bit excited, but usually if its youthful playfullness the will let him know and kick in back into touch, however if their taking a keen interest in him, more than usual and have been bred foals before, it would certainly get me thinking twice.

He may just be a fruity gelding and will grow out of it and I'd of thought he's of shown more signs last year, despite not being around mares but for safe measure I wouldnt panic but would get him tested, least you will know your options because if he is and you don't get it sorted, your not going to have it easy during summer.

I know. I am actually quite worried. His saving grace is that he is a gem to ride, apart from he has started putting his ears back and swishing his tail if we are hacking and someone gets between him and his bihatch...

I know I am joking but I am actually being quite serious. Is it actually possible to keep a rig? Do you treat them like they are a stallion?
