So we were doing a bit of loose jumping. We were up at about 3 foot so nothing too big & she was cantering round and popping them in a lovely manner. Until she sauntered up to the arena gate in a half walk/trot & tried to jump it.

She misjudged it terribly.

She got her front legs over it and half of her chest and was stuck on it, scrabbling around, legs flailing. In sort of a slow motion she turned upside down, managed to free herself, thrashed a bit and landed on her bum (still in the arena).

I could do nothing but watch in horror. Miraculously, she got up & cantered off - not a mark on her. After checking she wasn't lame I sent her on and she happily and calmly jumped again, not a problem, not bothered. I was a wreck!!

I genuinely thought I was going to be looking at broken legs or worse. Soooo relieved, silly, silly little mare...

I don't loose school for this very reason - my mare has jumped out of the arena twice before

Glad she's ok - u might want to think abt putting cones in front of the gate next time!

Zalacca, I think I will. She used to jump out at the old yard but cleanly, and has never shown signs of doing it here.

Will stick to jumping her under the saddle methinks!

Glad your girl is okay. must be something in the air at the moment as my boy jumped out of the sandschool yesterday when I was free schooling him. He is normally really good, responds to voice aids but yesterday was being a bit of a show off trotting and cantering round head and tail in the air. I asked him to change the rein and he cantered off, told him to stop being a show off, and he headed for the corner where you can see fields, he would normally stop and have a gawp anyway yesterday cantered in and popped over fence like it wasn't there and canter off up track

. Part of fence is where the concrete of the yard ends and mud track begins so was lucky he didn't land on concrete. Anyway went to catch him, he only gone a few yards and was eating grass. Checked him over and he was okay. Went back to measure fence later on it was a metre high and about 70cm wide as some old gates proped up against the outside of it and he cleared it about a foot. Happened so quick didn't have chance to panick as normally would and have tried not to think about what could have happened. Don't think I will be free schooling him again for a while though.

My daughter was loose schooling one of our ponies ( 13.2hh ) and he did exactly the same, only when he slammed into the gate, it threw the gate open the wrong way, I was standing the other side of it, where I thought I was safely out of the way, and it sent me flying backwards, smacked my head on the hard walkway leaving me with concussion - nice!
