I posted about a week ago about my horse chucking me everytime i get on. Well i had her back & teeth checked & there was no major problems with her. Now all thats been sorted my sister in law got on her because ive lost all confidence with her. She walked about 4 steps then started to bounce about then rear so Tracy gave her a tap with stick thinking it would make he go forwards but instead she got dumped. She'll stand there quite happy with you on her but when you ask her to walk she starts to play up! Any one got any ideas because i just dont know what to do next? Should I send her away to someone with more experience?

I was wondering how you were getting on , Does she lunge or does she resist when lunging? TBH it does sound like pain for her to suddenly change like that

Get the vet and get her hocks checked out specifically and get her legs checked out.

If this has started out of the blue it could well be pain related. You've done the good first step with teeth and back check.

Also have you had saddle fit checked.

If all that checks out fine then yes consider getting a pro to have a sit and see what they think.

She lunges like an angel, doesn't put a foot wrong! Ive been wondering whether to lunge her with rider. Its almost like she's napping.

I can totally relate to this because my IDx is exactly the same. He lunges brilliantly with his ears pricked and a happy look on his face but as soon as anyone gets on he tries to get them straight off. He prefers you not to get on at all but he is happier just standing after you've mounted than when he is asked to walk on. That's when he starts to buck even after one or two steps in walk. I have had his back checked 3 times now because I am convinced that it must be pain related (although I've only had him two months or so and can't vouch for his previous behaviour). I am waiting for another back specialist to come out to me later this month.

Will you keep me posted please, especially if you do find a cause for your mare's problems? Thanks, Annie

I did think about having her hocks checked. But i thought if she was in pain with her hocks she wouldn't be doing these massive rears. Think i will have to get her checked by vet.

Will Keep you posted Finellaglen. I just dont see what has gone wrong because i was riding for miles every night & she wouldnt do anything. She didnt even do any Woopee bucks when we would go for a canter. Ive shed so many tears over this she was my dream horse but now she's turned in a Nightmare of a Horse

You would think a horse with hock (or any hind end) problems wouldn't rear but that's not how horses operate and it's actually quite a common "resistance" in that situation. Worth a check if you have ANY reason to be concerned.

Can you get someone to come and assess the horse where you normally ride her? It's all very well to send a horse away - and it might be necessary - but solving the problem within the current situation is the real trick. Someone with a lot of experience dealing with such issues might be able to give you an idea of other possible "motivators" for the unwanted behaviour. Best would be someone who can get on and ride as well.

The "problem" with horses is that they are organic systems, just like us, so are constantly changing. Just because something was "okay" before doesn't mean it is now. Of course this is one of the great things about them because it means there is always the capacity for improvement.

I hope you can find someone to help you out. Sometimes all it takes is a new way of looking at the situation.

Did your vet check the back and are they a propper horse vet? As your bog standard small pet vet are rubbish imo. Have you had the saddler out? Have you thought that your horse may be cold backed? What happens when you lunge or walk around for 10mins then get on? How old is you horse? Has it been backed for long? Have you done ground work with your horse so that it gains your trust first?

Dont know about in foal because she for some reason produced alot of milk a few months ago, but a few people said that mare can do that. She had Mastitus aswell. She's 11, When i get on she just stands still like she has always done. I lunged her last week for about 30 mins then got on & she threw me off. We were practisng loading other day & she was happy to go trailer. I had Andrea pole look at her back.

You can have her what's your address ill pop her in the post tonight!!

Ill ring the vet tonight & hopefully they'll come out friday.

Hi , I thought I recognised the photo ! I am sorry you are still having problems with Marjie. I answered your "For sale" ad for her a few months ago and came to try her, you may remember me . I watched you ride her and she scared me so much I did'nt even get on her ! I have recently bought a young boy and I am sending him away to be professionaly schooled. I know Marjie is getting on a bit , but have you thought of doing the same with her. She really is a lovely looking mare, don't give up with her, as you have lost your confidence with her what have you got to lose?
By the sound of your posts the situation is getting worse, so please, for both your sakes, send her off to a professional yard to have her sorted out and she may well return as your dream horse once again.
I really hope it works out for you and once again, I am sorry I did'nt get on her but just watching the struggle you where having with her scared the hell out of me.
Good luck and keep us posted xxxx
