My horse took a tumble today, can someone put my mind at rest?

Well today's trip to our local riding club show didn't begin particularly well..

In the 2 and a half years I've had my mare she's never been a problem to load, until today. I led her onto the ramp, then she suddenly spun round and charged off down the yard with me in tow.

When she got to her stable, she tried to turn and run inside but went flying over as she was going much too fast, taking me down with her.

As she started to get up, she cracked me in the face with her head and I went flying (still somehow holding on!!) I don't really remember what happened so I'm not sure how hard she went down or where she landed, but she had a couple of scrapes on her left hind (nothing major - thank god she had travel boots on!!)

Amazingly, she seemed totally unphased and we ended up taking her anyway, not wanting to teach her that being silly loading means she doesn't have to leave her friends! She showed no signs of any trouble and didn't seem bothered by it at all.

I'm just having a panic now I'm home that I'm going to find a crippled horse when I get to the yard tomorrow :( Part of me thinks if she was fine for the rest of today she should be ok (maybe a little stiff) but I can't help freaking out a little.

Anyone had anything similar and not had any problems after?

There is nothing a vet would have done or could do now so don't panic. As above trot her up tomorrow and watch her over the next few days, she may be a little stiff but anything more get the vet. They are quite resilient as are we so don't panic.

edited to add there would be no harm if you wanted to get a chiro or physio to check her out in a few days.

As above poster says, may need a bute if a bit stiff - check with your vet is ok to give first though. You will probably need a soak in a nice warm bubble bath and a couple of painkillers - or a nice glass of wine!

Thanks, will be keeping a close eye on her for the next few days. She is a pretty tough sort (ID) so hoping a little stiffness will be the worst of it. She's due a check from the chiro so will get them to have a look.

As for me, my face is a little larger than usual, I think tomorrow is excess make-up for work day!

I had the same situation a few weeks back. Warming big lad (17,2) up for XC (it was to be our 1.10 debut - eek!) then he decided a two foot jump was WAY to big and literally fell over on the other side as he just didnt pick his legs up.
Fell onto his side - me going out the side door and him nearly rolling onto me (popping my already subluxed collar bone out even more).
I stood up to see him holding his front leg in the air. Was a "oh no" moment as I though he'd trashed a tendon. Thank god a vet was there, and just from walking around for 10 mins he went from cripple to sound. Dozy bugger.

We got around in one piece - me with a big smile and him with his ears forwards and pulling like a (nice) steam train!!

The next day I was filled with remorse, but he was fine!! Horses are a lot more resilient than we all think - thank goodness!!!

Hope your boy is fine in the morning :)

Oh dear GeeUp&Go, sounds scary!! Glad he was ok in the end and you got round.

Hopefully she will be too..she seemed fine as soon as she got up and has been walking around fine all day. We shall see...

Thats what I like about horses - theyll let you know if theyre not happy.

we've also had a boy half way up a horse box ramp a few years ago decide hed rather go back down. He flipped backwards off the side of the ramp. Knocked himself out for 10-20 secs, got up and he loaded straight back up. Loaded perfectly ever since!!!
Nowt so funny as horse... or their owners for that matter!!

She will be just fine, Holly! :)
A few months ago we had a situation where a horse reacted badly to a medication, crashed around the yard literally for ten minutes, careering off doors, walls and she hit the deck, hard, a fair few times (including on top of me!)
She had a fair few bad cuts, but was sound after a few days, albeit a bit stiff. She recovered very quickly considering how horrendous it was to watch! As said, good points - horses are very resilient :) (more resilient than I proved on that day!!)
Just do as above, a few cuddles and a fuss and she will be as good as new!

Most likely your horse will be fine - the others have given good advice above.

Just one thing, though. You got clonked on the head and have memory loss. If you get a headache, dizziness, sickness, or any other symptoms of concussion over the next few days, go get yourself checked out, OK?
