Found out today that my horse who is bad to lunge was broken n by monty Roberts! Apparently he was a pain so monty and Kelly took him to break!
He is a brilliant ride but have recently had lunging issues so was interesting to hear this!
Do you think I should learn about Montys ways or continue teaching him the way I know?

When you say that he has lunging issues, maybe he has never been taught and doesn't understand.

He may also have had a fright, got the rein tangled in his legs, etc. and this has led to bad memories.

Personally I dont think it matters if he was broken in by Bob the Builder as long as it was done right..!!! Lol.
If you are having issues maybe its worth getting help from your trainer/instructor..??
Im not against Monty Roberts at all, qyite the opposite, but most of what needs to be done boils down to common sense :)

This post is exactly why I'd never have a 'naturally' trained horse. It's like trying to speak Dutch to a Welshman.
If I was you OP I'd be inclined to carry on speaking to him in your language and be patient until he picks it up.

I have retaught him to lunge but since moving yards he has been a bit dim lol! I don't think it's overly amazing I just thought it was a random little thing I'd share!
I wonder if its why he wouldn't care if a plastic bag got wrapped round his head? It would be cool to know how much they did/didn't do with him :)

Do you mean 'single line' lunge? Monty Roberts never does that, he only uses two lines.

He says in his lectures and in his book that MRI scans in the USA indicate that horses who have been single line lunged will have back problems.

If he has a good balance and you have enough time to exercise him I probably wouldn't bother. I very rarely lunge!

Was only meant to be a fun post.. A little thing to share with people

I like my horses too lunge, we had a huge issue the other day and now he has done 2x perfect sessions but found this little thing out today and wanted to share

OK, in the spirit of it being a fun thread.

Does your horse climb on things when you aren't watching?:D

But it would be interesting if you could tell us anything you've noticed that's different.
In what way does he have issues with lunging?
Maybe he's just trying to "join up" and you keep telling him to run around in circles.:o:D

By asking his last trainer who knew the trainer before him and has known him since he was backed!

The only thing I've ever thought was odd for an ex racer is that he has never been spooky or silly, is very soppy and pretty much unflappable with bags, things on his head etc... ( I know this is a case with a lot of horses just none that I have ever owned! )

I'm not a great fan of lunging, puts too much strain on horses' legs.

I have plastic bags tied to the rails of my paddocks ( not pretty but...) and, guess what, 'osses don't care a fig for plastic bags!

Can't quote cuz I'm on my phone but this made me lol, I had a German pony who only 'spoke' German! Lol!

Apparently my wb was backed lightly, her breeder told me, by MR but according to the IH people that came out that would be a load of crap as he doesn't have the time to do 'everyday horses' when he comes to the uk.....

Same, I had to ask a German colleague to teach me lunging commands etc.

OP, drop them a line, the worst that can happen is no answer. I like Monty Roberts, he appears very gentle.

I haven't read the whole thread, but Monty and Kelly always lunge with two reins, never just one. Have you tried this?
