My horse was hit by an arctic lorry today..

This post has seriously upset and annoyed me,this driver is such a disgrace to the profession. I am so angry. As a professional driver I feel he has betrayed all of us that hold our LGV licenses. I hope he looses his license.
 
How horrendous! Hope your mare is ok, fingers crossed they manage to do something with the driver, and hope your friend and her horse aren't too shaken up either :(
 
This is horrendous.

I'm sick to my back teeth of hearing about irresponsible drivers. I heard a "think horse" type advert on the radio in manchester- i think they should make a bigger deal about it because it's more and more often that these things are happening.
 
I am sorry to hear of this accident. I can not believe that a driver of an articulated lorry would drive so dangerously. This realy is driving without due care and attention and he deserves to have the book slung at him.

In the event of any injury to your horse or yourself take a private prosecution against the owner/driver of the vehicle.
 
Shocking! I'm glad you are all okay though. I'd take him to task too, he shouldn't be in charge of a vehicle that size if he doesn't take enough care to drive it correctly and carefully. :mad:
 
:eek: That is shocking!! What an awful person to have no consideration, and in a lorry!! I'm so glad your all okay and I hope the horses don't end up being terrified of large vehicles in the future.

I'm with you Mike my heart goes out to the OP and her friend (and the horses too!!) I hope this 'man' is treated accordingly by the police it could have been so much worse for all concerned.
 
Jeepers, so glad everyone is ok!! Press on for something to happen - what a chump, he was possibly over-tired, still sleeping or even could be still under the influence (that is, if he isn't just thick!)

Personally I'd get the vet out to check your horse whether you think she is okay or not. Like a human involved in an RTA, if in the future you dvelop a problem you have to have seen a doctor about within a certain time (I think a week but sure some legals on here can tell you) of the accident. Better get your very brave lady checked to be safe.

Then submit the claim for the expense to his insurance company. It is an RTA. He caused damage, so should be held to account. Also means it will be on his insurance record so taken seriously. Once the Police identify the company he was working for, then make a formal complaint to them as well. The only way a person as ignorant as this will learn is if he sees there are consequences to his stupid actions.
 
Thank god you're all ok, makes my blood run cold to think what could have happened. Well done you for getting his number plate and reporting him. I hope this incident doesn't leave any lasting effects for any of you.
 
Am appalled by this man's reckless behaviour - really hope both you and your horse are OK - your mare sounds like one in a million. Would seriously have the vet out though - for a thorough check over.
 
i had a similar incident a couple of years ago, by 2 lorries from the same company, they squeezed past my horse at speed and the wing mirror clipped my riding hat, scared my horse and then before i had a chance to calm him the other one came shooting past, it was a low level digger carrier type one, i just saw the lorry whizzing past and prayed my horse wouldn't go near it as if he had then he would have lost his legs.

i reported it to the police and gave the company name but the company denied all knowledge of it, they said their lorries weren't in the area at that time. basically they got away with it but it has now stopped me from wanting to hack out on the roads.

i hope the police take it seriously and catch the idiot. they should take his licence off him and make him go on a road safety course before he can reapply for it. the company should be fined and also should pay compensation for that. it's disgusting.

just out of interest was it a british driver or a foreign one? just wondering because british drivers are MORE aware of riders hand signals than the foreign ones (not that it should make a difference either way) and he should have listened to your 'requests'.

i hope your horse is ok today and not suffered any ill effects both mentally and physically from this horrible incident.
 
Get the vet to document the injuries.You can claim all expenses from the driver's insurance company but you do need to get it documented, especially as it might cause issues later on.

What an absolute ******** Well done for keeping so calm. It could have been so much worse with a less experienced rider.

I too would get the vet out, just as a precaution and documented, and make a real point with this a******e so he panics into doing 5mph everytime he sees a horses bum!!

What a pillock. Well done for going after him!!!
 
So glad you're all okay and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you that neither you nor the horse shows any "after-effects".

I too would get the vet out to check, and keep all vets bills and related documents safe in case you need to produce them if this goes further.

Also, if you haven't already done so, please also report this incident to the BHS, who are gathering data on horse accidents.
 
OP my OH's uncle is a policeman in Cheltenham, not sure what exactly but I know he's quite high up. They sound like they're doing quite a good job atm anyway, but if you need to give them an extra prod, pm me and I'll get in touch with him for you.

I'm so glad you are all ok. Please do take this as far as it can go, we as a nation of horse riders cannot afford to let an incident like this go unpunished. :mad:
 
As most people have said I would definitely contact your vet - even if just to get them out to document the injuries your horse has sustained. Also, if you haven't done so already and, assuming you have insurance, then contact your insurer and advise them of the incident giving them the police reference if you have one. Just to log it more than anything else as, should your horse actually require treatment then the insurance have a record of you notifying them and then can proceed with claiming against the individual/company. To be honest i think you should pursue this - at the very least the driver should be charged for dangerous driving, have his licence removed or suspended. Lessons need to be learned and drivers like this need to know there are consequences for this, they can't just do as they please. What if you were cyclists, would he have done the same? He could have killed someone the way he was acting.

I do not condone people claiming for little things or accidents BUT I would be very tempting to claim for injuries for your horse and trauma for you, your friend and your friends horse. To be honest I would even be tempted to go to the Docs to get checked out in case you are in shock!

The driver was Polish, and he came past AFTER Ponyfeet had turned and put her hand up to ask him to wait. She said he was moving at a speed which you would if on foot have to sprint to stay with it. He just bullied his way through.
If he hadn't driven into a small village with narrow roads, I doubt he would have bothered to stop.

Luckily there weren't any sharp edges on the lorry or it could have ended up much worse.

That's awful, your poor horse, and you! From my experience, lorry and bus drivers seem to be the most considerate of the majority of drives, but clearly not all of them are.
Did you take pictures of your horse's bum/hocks? Just incase the police take it further you can show them photographic evidence?
Hope everything is ok with your mare and you and your friend aren't too shaken up.

I seriously hope that driver gets what's coming to him. I don't suppose he'd want scuff marks and paint on his backside!
 
That's awful, in some ways you and your friend are lucky it couldn't off been much worse though as well.

God I'd of been that fuming I'd of no doubt punched the idiot if that was me, but then that wouldn't get anyone anywhere but it would of made me feel better at the time.

Hope both horses and yourselves will get over this ordeal.
 
Foreign driver. :rolleyes: I work for a ferry company and it's absolutely terrifying the idiots that alot of haulage companies have driving for them now. Most don't speak a word of English and none know the actual road rules of this country. Those photo's are shocking, I'm so glad it wasn't any worse. I cannot image how scared you all must have been. I hope the idiot is strung up..but more likely it will come to nothing. :mad:
 
Crikey that is awful!

My advice would be to report it to your insurers and speak to their legal advice line. I would second the suggestion to get the vet to check her over to be on the safe side, keep the paperwork and recover the cost of this from the driver's insurance.

Do keep onto the police and make sure that they take action, and it might also be worth reporting the incident to your local paper so that they can run a story of horse related road accidents.
 
I can't believe some people. That's so scary, what sort of an idiot is he? Made me feel a bit sick thinking about it.

What an absolute saint of a horse, I really hope she's okay.
