My horse was hit by an arctic lorry today..

totally disgustin, they always blame the horse and rider too if there is an accident.

Hello- we are entitled to use the roads too!

It should be compulsory for every driver to know the highway code in regards to horses and rights of way!

Thankfully you are ok and hope your friends horse and yours are not too traumatised x

Those pictures are horrific - what a complete t*at! Not surprised to hear he is foreign either (not trying to tarnish them all with the same brush but I have met a fair few of them on the roads!)

Your very lucky your horse didnt panic too much - you both may not be here to tell the tale.

So glad to hear you are all Ok - absolutely gobsmacked TBH.

Hi everyone, thank you all so much for your replies. Yes the lorry driver was foreign but he spoke English and he understood every word I said.

I didn't call the vet today as thankfully Ebony is absolutely fine, not stiff or lame at all!! My friends horse is ok too and my friend and I are fine, like you all said we are VERY lucky!

There's no way I'm going to just let this go.. I couldn't believe it when the driver just ignored me asking him to stop and carried on!!

Do you think it would still be worth calling the vet out tomorrow? There's no visible marks on her now, and she's fine in herself..

Ebony isn't insured so I couldn't go down that route.

Woodykat - Thank you so much for your offer, I'll definitely take that up if nothings being done about it!

Also I'm on to the websites some of you have sent me now to report it.

Thanks again everyone for all of your advise and support :)

Kitsune - I wrote all of this on my phone and it 'Corrected' my spelling when I put in artic to arctic and I didn't realise haha!! :D

Those pictures do make it look like she'd be pretty sore. I'd have been tempted to get the vet out to be honest so they can actually examine yiour horse and document any injuries she does actually have (even if that is just bruising). I would speak to your vet and advise why you would like them to come out - ie because you have reported this to the police, wish to pursue the case and to assist will need evidence from a professional source. I really hope this driver and company are held accountable for this.

It sounds like you and your horse had a lucky escape.I have just told my husband who is a truck driver and he is fuming..It gives the good people in his profession a bad name.
He also said good luck with getting any sort of justice against the driver..you will need it..Eastern European drivers do not follow British driving laws such as tachograph rules and driving hours whilst in this country although they should.
VOSA is trying to clamp down on un-roadworthy trucks and driving hours but they cannot enforce the driving hours for every foreign truck. The driver who hit you had possibly been driving 12-24 hours straight.I have been with hubby in the truck when a polish driver overtook us on the M25 whilst he was on the phone, watching telly, eating pizza and on his laptop all at the same time..

I hope your horse is not too sore in the morning.x

i think your horse probably does have some bruising, the fact that paint was left means there was solid contact. i would definitely get a vet to check her, to fill out a report and send it to the Police. it will give you more ammunition against the driver and his employer, it'll make it harder for them to brush the whole matter aside.

How awful a day for you. Try a no win no fee person to claim any vet expenses of the driver. I would agree have vet out encase any injuries in different part of body. Impact was on back end but could have jolted further along body. Horses will always hide pain as much as possible so be really careful next few days.

I asked a lorry driver to slow down once, he just stuck his fingers up at me!!! Some however have been lovely and driven past wide and slow.

hope your horse is still ok today, looking at them pics i agree about the lorry making solid contact to have left the paint on the horse so get a vet to check the horse over and document all the findings.

my OH is a HGV driver and he's had to be passenger for new drivers in his company, he says that most are ok but he's had a few 'foreign' drivers who had no understanding of road signs or anything else. he was shocked the one night he got home as they very nearly had an accident because the driver didn't register what the sign had said, my OH told him to pull over and took over the driving from there.

all drivers but especially HGV drivers should have to take a course on things like meeting horses on the roads, when a rider tells you to wait they wait and actually understand the request.

bloody idiot (anything else would get me banned!) to be driving like that, fair play on you for chasing after him and i hope you get a good outcome from the company/police and your horse isn't going to be traumatised from what happened.

This is horrendous.

I'm sick to my back teeth of hearing about irresponsible drivers. I heard a "think horse" type advert on the radio in manchester- i think they should make a bigger deal about it because it's more and more often that these things are happening.

definately agree about the "think horse" advert

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acF0h6uk4cM this came up in my subscription box on youtube and although it is being passed around the horsing community it needs to be passed around more do you not think?? especially after things like this!!

Jesus! What a moron (the driver!).

I live not too far from you (in fact I used to live opposite the police station a few years ago!) and I have to say where my horse is I have encountered nothing but lovely drivers, even the motor bike drivers have been fantastic (and my horse is now getting pretty accepting of motorbikes). Such a shame that one moronic driver ruined your day.

Have you chased the police up? Get him reported and fined, I hope to go he looses his license over this!

My god what a complete idiot the draiver was (my polite version)
So glad you horse is ok, and what about your friends horse did the poor thing calm down
Huge well done on being so sensible after the accident and getting details i am sure i would of ended up puching the bloke and swearing at him with a mouth like a fish wife.
Hope the police do take it seriously and he get in trouble for this

omg how terrifying. please chase this up.

accidents and such dangerous drivers make it so scary on the road no matter how good youre horse is..

Am I the only one that immediately though 'deja vu'??

This was originally posted in Feb...
Although, I would love to know if there has been any updates on the situation

Any updates? seeing the date on the original post? though sadly as OP did not get the name on the side of the lorry she might struggle and there has been an awful lot of debate about foreign drivers - there would seem to be very little legal comeback on them.

Unlikely to get anywhere with a foreign lorry driver. I'm just curious though where does the law stand on riding two abreast on a narrow road?

according to the highway code you are aloud to ride 2 abreast (sp) if one of the horses or riders are young, nervous or inexperienced, it doesnt specify what sort of roads this applies to so i think you can assume it applies to all roads and drivers shouldnt pass unless it is safe to do so.

If that happened to me or anyone I was with out hacking....I'd almost be praying that the driver wouldn't stop, as I'd be bloody lethal!!!!

Hope you're all ok.

Glad to hear you are all OK. Push this all the way this igonorant, inconsiderate b&stard deserves a driving ban at the very least
