Was this the accident outside Woodside in Forest Road in Horsham .... if it was I followed your letters in the paper, and was so very sad then as I am now, with tears for you and you horse .... your Web Site is such a good idea and a memory of your beloved horse ... (forgive me if I am wrong

From my own riding experience the drivers are getting worse, so the more publicity the better!

oh poor lady how heartwrenching. Why not see if places like BHS website etc will post a link to yours? x

what a terrible thing to happen to you and Holly, I can't imagine how you get over something like that and the images that will be with you forever. I think your website and campaign is a great idea, maybe it will save someone else's horse.

What a touching story. One of my former horses was killed in a hit and run about a month after i sold him. Fortunatly, no one was on him but the driver hit him and left the scene leaving his 16 year old owner to find him with a broken neck.

He too was PTS at the scene and the police never caught the driver despite endless appeals.

Ive added your site as a link to my own; I hope you dont mind.

Your story is heart-breaking, but keep your spirit strong and keep your campaign going. I have had quite a few incidences with close calls taking youngsters out to learn and drivers speeding and/or cutting in too close and causing some hair raising experiences only to be told I shouldn't be there by the odd ignorant person!
applause to you and your website, I think its excellant

So sorry to hear your story Tracy. I have also been a victim of speeding cars, once on horse back and recently July07 on the motor way returning from the vets, luckily no horses were involved this time, but the human toll was huge and despite no loss of life, it has made a huge impact on both my friend who nearly died and my life.

My pony Fly was hit by a car on a quiet lane, the car was going past us at speed and Fly just put his quarters out and was struck by the mirror, the noise was awful and sounded worse than it was. Fly just had a haematoma on his quarters and was not lame, it could have been much worse.

In July 07 my friend and I had was just returning from Bell Equine vets, we had left her pony at the vets for surgery and was chatting away in the slow lane, it was a lovely day and we had had good news from the vets.

Suddenly from nowhere there was a crash as if we had been hit by a steam train, the glass went immediately and then we just went over and over and over. I believe I lost consciousness and when I came too with a jolt, I had slipped out of my belt and was looking down the motorway. I could see my jodhpur boots yards up the road. I called for my friend and when I heard her and visualised her, I could see she had sustained serious injuries. I then looked for my dog, looking around at was once a landrover, I believed she was dead, as no one should have survived this, let alone me!

The fire service, police and ambulance along with the air ambulance were amazing. My friend was taken to London by helicopter and I was taken into the A&E department that I am a sister, to the dismay of my staff, bless them, a surreal experience.

My friend despite horrific injuries is a true inspiration to me and everyone who knows her, she is back at the yard mucking out with help, we did not think she would survive. Horses are great healers and horsey people are very strong.

I now believe that speed kills or can kill, its not a new aspect for me, unfortunately as an A&E nurse, I see RTA's every day and its usually due to speed or negligence. I want to put a picture of my accident in the back of my car to let people see what can happen, but I'm not sure that it would help.

We need more cameras and more speed restrictions and I know everyone moans about them, I for one used to, until it happened to me..........

Please watch your speed and watch others on the road too.

I have read your letter and I'm so sorry for the loss of your horse, your best friend. I'm also finding that cars are getting faster on the roads while out hacking, and it worries me. hugs xx

There isnt alot of things that brings me to tears but your story did , I think as a parent with a young child and hacking out quite regularly it brings it home , that you are not safe on the road . I wear hi viz as does my child , its not me that has to be careful , its the drivers that need to be educated .

Well done for raising the awareness that is so much needed xx

I can totally sympathise - it is just over 6 years since I lost my beautiful horse Amber in similar circumstances. I was out hacking on my own. Amber was literally bomb- proof on the roads. We were heading up the hill towards home - only about 2 minutes from the yard. We were hit from behind by a car. The driver said the sun was in her eyes and she didn't see us. I heard the bang as she hit us but it seemed completely unassociated with us and everything went into slow motion. I remember hearing the noise and thinking what the hell is that and not realising it was us somersaulting over the top of her car. The next thing I knew we were on the floor and I was trapped under amber facing the opposite way to which we were going. Amber must of been in loads of pain but she still made the effort to roll off me - I think she must of really cared for me to do that. I knew from the second I saw her she would never get up. There was blood pouring from her nose and a huge gash in her side. As it turned out that wasn't all though she had a broken pelvis and the vet that attended said he could feel fragments of bone when he rectalled her and it wasn't clear if it was bits of her pelvis or her spine. She was eventually put to sleep on the road side. I am in floods of tears writing this. I still miss her and totally understand where you are coming from with your story.
The driver wasn't prosecuted by the police and although Amber was insured most things weren't covered by the policy. I did persue things privately in the end because I felt that the driver had to be penalised in some way even if it was just through her insurance company and it helped me to close the episode and give me some sort of justice. Although I understand the police's point of view that it was an accident and not deliberate - IMO she was still driving dangerously and if it had been a cyclist or a pedestrian she would have killed them and then the police would of viewed it quite differently - but she would still of been driving just as carelessly.
I tried campaigning a while back to get the BHS road safety advert on the telly more but it didn't really come to anything. I hope you are more successful and if there is anything I can do to help let me know.

I saw your campaign on ebay a while again and bought one of your stickers, sits nicely on the back of my car! I've have obviously read the story before but still feel sick from reading it again. Only thing i did think at the time was it would have been nice to have some reference to the holly campaign on it?! Let's just hope we can get drivers to take notice of it! I know it's not always just them as riders can be pretty stupid but it is always those people that get away with it! I have had a few arguments with riders i have met on the roads not wearing hi-vis or not riding properly, reins down by there ankles etc.

I'm in tears sitting reading this thread. To loose a horse in the circumstances described must be horrific and I really don't know how you guys have got through it.
The roads are dangerous and in my opinion they are made worse for horse riders due to most country lanes having 60mph limits. Where are the majority of yards? In amongst country lanes. I've never ever understood it and doubt I ever will, how on earth can twisty, narrow lanes have the same speed limit as long, straight and wide roads?
I hope you carry on with your campaign, I posted recently that our local radio was playing a 'slow down for horses' advert.

How awful for everyone who has lost a horse this way. There are too many people who've had to live with this.

IMO the general public are too shaded from the truth of what happens in these incidents, so I think if people have incident photos etc they should be made public. After all what would affect you more? A picture of a horse and rider asking you to stop OR a picture of what happens when you dont?

Maybe if everyone could add their stories to this page it could pack a hell of a lot of punch.

What a dreadful sotry. i am so sorry to hear about your horse, but your campaign is brilliant and i hope it gets the widest audience possible.

I am SO lucky that I don't have to ride on the roads.

It is the saddest thing to lose a horse but to lose it in those circumstances is heartbreaking and will never be forgotten. For most of us, it's the suffering of the horse that we cannot live with and the ignorance of the drivers that we just cannot condone.
My aunty lost her horse too, this was on a main road where there is 2 way traffic but it wasn't a car it was a lorry, he just passed too close and the horse swung it's quarters out, next minute.......well, I think you know what happened

My heart does go out to you and good luck with your campaign. I already have a sticker on my car to ask drivers to slow for horses but you'll always get the one's who know best

I was thinking of starting to hack my horse out again when the weather improves, but I'm not sure I'm going to bother having read this. It's such a sad story and such a waste of life. I really don't understand why people would rather risk the lives of others than leave a fewminutes earlier or arrive a few minutes later

So sad - RIP Holly

Keep up the good work with yor campaign though - I'll have a sweatshirt when you've got some in stock

Im so so sorry for your loss. Ive just read your website and am now in tears
frown.gif
Can you tell us what happened to the driver please? I hope and pray they threw the book at him but sadly I doubt that

I too lost my beloved horse after being hit by a van so if there is anything i can do to help raise awareness i am more than happy to help

Oh that's just so sad, what a needless waste.

Maybe this is a good reminder to all of us to give an even bigger thank you to the drivers that do go past safely?

My friend too lost her horse after being hit by a speeding motorist. Most tragically though was that her other friend who was riding him was also killed. She has never forgiven herself for letting her friend ride him that day.

The driver was never prosecuted and the girl left behind two beautiful children. Its a day i will never forget
