I have recently bought a new horse (16.2 Irish thoroghbred) I had her out for a week as I was on holidays with various people checking on her for me,

But when I came back she was just standing at bottom of the field and wouldnt come to call like she usually does. I went to get her and she was covered in mud up to her belly. she had gone out in to a bog, we have had so much rain that it was really wet out there and must have sunk.
she had what I thought was mud fever(loads of scabs on he legs (like rain scald) she had a lot of heat in her back leg so after cold hosing and cleaning her up I decided to keep her in out of the muddy field and see how her leg was in the morning,

any way got her out this morning and her back legs are up like a balloon and heat in all four legs, i have cold hosed her and walked her round the swelling has started to go down so I have put her out in a small dry paddock to keep walking around and will check on her in an hour.
obviously if she is no better i will call out vet

Just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience of a horse having an alergic reaction and what you have done to help treat it?

Could be where she was struggling to get herself out of the bog she may of tweaked her muscles a bit as well.Hence the heat and swelling. I think I would be tempted to call a vet and have a quick chat to get there opinion

Do you know how long she was in the bog?? If she had been stuck and struggled for a while she could have strained her legs also being muddy and wet wouldn't have been good either. She probably has fluid in her legs from either struggleing or being the mud for some time. I'd phone the vet and ask for advice if in doubt.

You've probably thought of this already but when she is better perhaps you could get some electric tape or something to fence of the boggy parts when they are dangerous. Obviously an allergy/pulled muscles isn't great but if she got too mired to get out could be a lot worse - eek! Best of luck to both of you.

If she's walking ok and the swelling is going down, I think she'll be fine. A phone call to the vet won't cost, though and they may be able to advise what to put on it (if anything). I think I'd also be fencing off a bog so deep, though. Any idea how long she was out there? It would be awful if she was there for days, with people just thinking she was stood at the bottom of the field.

Yeah yard owner said he will fence it, but I wnt be putting her in that field again.

I think she has just gone in sunk a bit and then panicked to get out, she had ripped her leg stap on he rug and I tend to do these up quite close to her belly. (im paranoid that they will get there legs stuck when rolling and playing about in the field.

I did ring the vet he just said to carry on bathing them in salt water, leave her out, plaster with fly repellant. And keep them clean
her legs are so much better today, with no swelling just a little heat in back near side

Im just really worried that when she does stay in the stable her legs will swell again and that aint good as we do sj and need to keep stabled

Any way wont be doing that for a while.

when do you think I could start gentle riding again?
