My horse won't trot beside me

I'm wanting to do some showing this year with my 5 year old hes very nervous and doesn't like trotting beside me - gets himself really flustered and either sticks the breaks on or trots diagonally and the bolts , any hints or tips ?

Practise alongside a sturdy fence to keep in straight, with schooling whip to send him forward and in bridle. Get him used to going correctly in walk, then introduce few strides of trot. Gradually build up the number of strides, make it easy for him to get it right. Once he is competant, start at the beginning again away from the fence.
