And went for 5 miles, the last couple up a main road.
Thank you, thank you to the two people in cars who managed to turn them off into a side road and get someone from the village to help...to the people who caught them and put them in a field... to the police for making the connection when I found they were missing and called...to the lady who owns the field they were in who helped me this morning and to the other lady, who I don't yet know, that rents the field and has her ponies in it who had to put up with my 2 being chucked in with them overnight.
Amazingly both are fine, some scuffed hooves and very tired. One was apparently hit by a car but there is no sign at all of any damage.
So, make sure your public liability is up to date, even if you are nowhere near the road and no one else rides your horses.
Tomorrow is a day for delivering thank you letters, wine and chocolates. I can't believe they are both OK

Having been through this 2 weeks ago, BIG hugs and wine for you. i bet it was a big shock. I had the dubious honor of trying to chase him down the road on foot until the lady stopped in her car, then followed him for 5 miles with me. . ive since been completely unable to track her down which is gutting because he owes her his life!

It's so scary, I had this happen during the summer. They managed to get through a hole in the fence and onto a B road, which is one of the main roads out of the village. Thankfully at 2am a passing ambulance (fortunately not on it's way to an emergency!) spotted two wandering around and the other one stuck in the hedge and called the police for help. Because the stables are hidden from view from the road they couldn't find any doors to knock on, but found the hole in the hedge and managed to chase them back through.
It was only the next day when I saw the police tape covering up the gap and I thought there had been a car crash through into the field, I phoned them to ask what had happened and was told all this!

Thankfully no injuries, and lots of laughing and joking from the police as they were all apparently scared of the horses (there had recently been in the news a story of a man trampled to death by a cow) so they had all spent ages faffing and egging each other on to put them back in! What good horses though, they were apparently bemused by the whole thing and just stood there seeing if there were any treats on offer!

So grateful to them all, and especially to the ambulance who just happened to be passing. Had they been out all night who knows what could have happened.

Glad yours are all ok!

Scary! Glad they're ok. Years ago our lot (including donkey) used to escape and leg it up the road and we used to get calls off people but they'd only usually head to the farmer's house up the road. Those were the days when field gates were just tied up with pieces of rope!! :)

You do wonder what possesses them to go that far away from their fields though!

THank you for your thoughts. Have just been out frantically feeling their legs again and still fine.
I have no idea why they went so far, they did go first to the livery yard where I got my old boy from, so that made sense, but then why up through the village and onto the main road? My main hacking route would be to turn left before the village and follow a route home.
We saw them on our cctv, they weren't stressed, just mooching along. THey had knocked down a gatepost that was holding slip rails up, I have no idea why.

Glad they are safe and you are thanking people for helping, not all do.
I was phoned one night as police had caught a horse (my daughter is in the police and said we would help) I got dressed, fetched our horsebox and collected the horse. I found somewhere with a spare stable. Nothing was heard from the owner for 3 days. She then collected her horse, did not offer payment to the stable owner and never contacted me.
I contacted her to ask how her horse was and she didnt even thank me.
Luckily some people are like you so I would help again.x

I don't know how she can live with herself. I know we would all do it to help an animal, but I am still so appreciative, they went well beyond the call of duty.
