Not that i have much in my Kingdom at the moment, other than a leaking roof and a lot of debt lol ....

Anyhow, I digress ... can anyone out there PLEASE recommend me a truly, really, honestly, genuinely water proof coat.

Not a shower proof, or a water proof for a couple of hours, or a we`ll just say it`s waterproof when actually it repels it for a short while until it gives up the ghost in spectacular fashion.

I have tried a couple of Ski Jackets, a Berghaus outdoor hiking jacket, another horse specific, long down to the ground fandabbydosy thing, with coat to leg attachments to keep your legs dry whilst riding (HA!!) ..... and more "kagools" than you can shake a stick at ... all have leaked, every single one has let water in and left me sopping wet through ....... Please peeps, help me out x

Also looking for one of these! And waterproof trousers that are waterproof!! I'm fed up of getting a wet bum!

I splashed out a few years ago and got the expensive 3 in 1 Musto thigh length jacket. £250 Its brilliant! Never cold or wet under it.
Has got zip pockets, even mobile phone pocket, zip out gillet, and the poppers you can undo to cover your bum/saddle when riding.

Just checked musto website, They don't seem to make them anymore :( Sorry

I have never discovered this most magical item. I have a berghaus - it leaks at the seams. I have a tog24 coat - it leaks at the zip. I have a Lee Cooper coat - it leaks EVERYWHERE. Although that last one wasn't touted as waterproof in any way.

Dianchi I lol'd at your post - 'here it is guys, the most brilliant coat, does everything, I own one... oh hang on, you can't get one'. chuckle

This is the new version of the Musto Combination jacket

Not sure it looks as good tbh - but i agree, I bought one a couple of years ago, its absoluely brilliant! plus the zip in gillet is really nice on its own!

Was your berghaus jacket goretex? Because I have a berghaus goretex jacket that I've had for about 15 years and its still very waterproof when worn in the rain for prolonged periods of time.
I would say maybe look at goretex lined jackets made by northface, berghaus etc if yours isn't.
Also with a lot of waterproof jackets they have a waterproof coating (instead of a membrane like goretex) so if you wash them in harsh detergents it damages the coating making the coat leak, as I discovered after an old boss decided to be helpful and wash my Musto in harsh biological detergent, it then leaked like a sieve!
:-(

My Jack Wolfskin 3 in 1 jacket is great, horse dirt of various kinds kills waterproofing in regular jackets (which I think outperform horsey jackets in all other ways) so wash with a specialist waterproof cleaner, or a VERY mild detergent and double rinse, very regularly.

I have a Musto Innovation Goretex jacket. Its about 5 years old and is amazing. Best thing I ever bought. Never leaked and I it pretty much all through the year. Its lighweight and breathable and room for layers.

Just searched for them and unfortunatly they dont seem to make them anymore. The new Musto coats and jackets dont look as practical as the used to.

My Mum bought herself a gortex berghaus a couple of years ago in the sale in John Lewis of all places she picked it up for £15 as it was the last one in stock and hot pink. However, it has coped with rain, wind, snow and kept her dry and warm throughout many winters. I think it was one of her best bargains!

My Barbour wax jacket is 17 years old and is still as warm and waterproof as the day I got it! As long as you keep it clean and get some wax to top it up it's probably the best investment you can make.

My 2nd hand waxed Barbour Gamefair really stood the test of time. Once I left the flap of the bellows pocket tucked in the wrong way and found my phone floating in its own swimming pool :p - works a little too well!

Have had 2 Musto 3 in one coats and they've always been the best, kept me warm and dry and lasted for years. Unfortunately, for some unknown reason, Musto have stopped making them - spoke to them direct when I couldn't find one to buy anywhere. But, ebay saved the day! Found a brand new one that some one was selling as they had given up riding . They still come up for sale so it's worth a try and would definitely recommend.

I bought a ventile jacket from Howies back in 2005 :) I've never looked back.

Wind proof, water proof, it's perfect though I wish it was slightly longer in the torso. Howies stopped making them for awhile, but have just recently relaunched their ventile range with a slightly better cut. However, I can't fault the fabric. Years on and water gathers on the jacket like droplets - I shake it off and within 5 minutes the jacket is bone dry. It's never been reproofed and the stitching hasn't budged. Best 300 quid I've ever spent.

EDIT: nevermind, it seems Howies aren't doing their original ventile anymore as this version is only shower proof :( the original was dry clean only and 100% water tight. Shame they won't bring that back. Still recommend a lot of other Howies clothing though!

I have a Berghaus Mera Peak gortex jacket and it's been brilliant. It's a men's coat and fits many layers and has a brilliant hood, really is waterproof and wind proof that I don't need that many layers in the depths of winter.. I love it! Best coat I ever bought

The Caldene one I've just had to chuck in the bin after ten years cos the pockets had all been ripped off and the zip is busted....best coat ever, that was. Can't find another one like it..
I'm having the same struggle'. All the ones I like the look of are about £200 .... :(

Another vote for the no longer made musto 3in1. Realised they had stopped making them last year & picked up an end of line in the sale 1/2 price. It's smugly sitting in the cupboard as the current one is still keeping out the worst of Dartmoor weather.

Try a sailing shop!

I'm looking to buy a waterproof coat for my mum for Christmas, after splashing out on a very nice looking but absolutely useless in the rain Mountain Horse Winnipeg ! - Don't get one of those, you get soaked in the lightest of rain :( (but it does look lovely :D ) Hopefully some of the ones mentioned on here will be suitable as I'm struggling to find anything that is any good !

I took a cheapy Shires winter coat on a BHS Iceland trek.....you can imagine the slanted 60 mile an hour rain....

The Best Waterproof Coat Ever...SERIOUSLY drenched most days, but that coat hung on with a vengence!

...never found a similar one.... :(

Get to a sailing supplies store - leave the high street fashion rubbish that is horsey stuff in the tack shop.

Another good option is a shooting store, I have a shooting coat, seriously waterproof and pockets everywhere, will be buying a sailing jacket for Canada though!
