My kingdom for a GENUINELY water proof coat ......

My goretex paclite jacket from berghaus has never leaked and rolls up to the size of a grapefruit!

I also have a paramo coat that is totally waterproof.

Old fashioned heavy goretex is the fabric used by mountain guides in the cairngorms so utterly waterproof in the most hideous conditions. I wouldn't wear it with horses though as it is a bit like a kagoule. My old goretex trousers are tough enough to slefge down hills in snow without a sledge!

Whatever you buy follow the washing instructions to the letter.

I took a cheapy Shires winter coat on a BHS Iceland trek.....you can imagine the slanted 60 mile an hour rain....

The Best Waterproof Coat Ever...SERIOUSLY drenched most days, but that coat hung on with a vengence!

...never found a similar one.... :(

I have a cheap and cheerful shires coat that also hangs on with a vengence! It is starting to leak a bit now by the zip when worn in torrential rain and it was a bit short to truly take the holy grail of waterproof coats but it's out performed Ariats, Musto's and everything else I've tried and for a cheap and cheerful coat I can't fault it...

My Jack Wolfskin 3 in 1 jacket is great, horse dirt of various kinds kills waterproofing in regular jackets (which I think outperform horsey jackets in all other ways) so wash with a specialist waterproof cleaner, or a VERY mild detergent and double rinse, very regularly.

^^^ this! I recently bought a JW jacket and so far it has been great.... but it was impressed on me by the shop staff that regular washing with the correct products is key to long life. The dirt from horses allows water in through the membrane

Wow, lots of suggestions .. i`m just back in from the field and i`m soaked again :(

I only ever wash with Fairy non bio, and even then only use 1 tablet instead of 2, and i wash them the absolute minimum i can get away with (think once or maybe twice a winter lol) as i`d heard washing them causes problems.

The Berghaus is now in the bin ... and the ski jacket will be following it shortly me thinks ..... time to go put some of your suggestions into ebay, thanks folks :)

I got my last riding jacket from TK Maxx - It's a ski jacket and has done 2 winters completely waterproof so far (touch wood it lasts another year) and goes in the washing machine every couple of weeks and still water proof!

It's a good make, but last season's colours (when I brought it) so got a £250 jacket for £60 :)

xx
