Got a call from YO at lunch time today to say she thought Jake was abit out of sorts today.

She put him out this morning and he just kinda stood about the gate, normally he is the life and soul in the morning! rushing about the field.
So she kept an eye on him and noticed him not really interested in eating grass and was rolling about abit and looking at his tummy.

YO called me at 12 to say, she'd brought him in and I should pop up earlier that I normally do and check him over and see what I think ect, so went straight up and right enough he was lying down in his stable (heads normally up for a nose as soon as he hears a car) first thought... colic.
I had really had to encourage him to get up and he just stood :( head down looking sorry for himself. He was roasting and breathing really heavy.

Vet came out, his temp was 101.3, he had a sore tummy and a cough! :( she said viral!!! (Vets getting as bad as docs for that!) she gave him an antibiotic and anti inflammatory jag and is coming back to check him again tomorrow lunchtime.

Her last words were, he should settle down and perk back up abit after that.
She said to put his stable rug on him int he meantime.

I'm going back up at 8 to check on him but YO nipped out at 7 to check on him and texted to say she was going to take rug off as he was sweating and not much change from earlier.

Anyone else had experience of this?

my friends horse was like this. After a couple of days went upto newmarket and had to have an operation as they found that he has injested a piece of metal
 
I would put a thinner rug on if he is sweating, but not take it off as he'll be cold now. If it is a virus, why has she given him antibiotics?

So sorry he's not well, hope he gets better soon but I would call vet if no better...
 
Oh god, hope he's not eaten something stupid :(

I've not idea, I'm not sure if she was acting on the safeside or what.

He's half clipped out, so really did not want to leave him with nothing on over night.

Really don't want to worry you but my horse had the same symptoms and he had perotinitis. My lad was originally diagnosed with a virus too :( please check his temperature and if it is still high, call the vet again. Don't delay as that's what I did overnight kept checking him and he was just very dull and not thrashing around or anything. The next morning he was still the same (he had also gone through episodes of shaking, the vet said it was caused by high temperature)

The next day I had to rush him to Liphook and he spent 10 days in intensive care. If you are in any doubt or worried call the vet regardless of what they said earlier about not coming back until tomorrow.

Hope you boy improves soon. Would be tempted to see if the vet can run some bloods and/or do a tummy tap. Hopefully when the painkillers start to bring his temperature down, he will start to feel a bit better.
 
He's abit more perky but still feels quite clamy, not round the head tho.
I've put fleece on him, while he's in the stable. I wont sleep tonight, i just know it :(
 
how is he today?? Horse at our yard had same symptoms we all thought mild colic, vet called after 24hours of still being off and diagnosed peritonitis it was touch and go at that point if he would be ok, as it had taken a hold so quickly.
Hope he is better i would push the vets to do more tests, or second opinion. atleast if it is he is on antibiotics so that is a good start!
 
my horse was heavy breathing and looking very lethargic then sweated up went cold etc, the vet said he had a viral infection but it was a deep one rather than normal, he gave him some injections (i can't remember what they were now) and told me to keep him in if it's very wet or windy (it would aggravate the chill), take a little bit more hair off his belly and chest and to put a lightweight stable rug on him. he kept getting sweaty so the YO would take the rug off and tell me not to put one on the next night etc.
one day he came in and within 30 minutes he was sweating so we sponged him down (it was hot weather as well) and let him chill out a bit.

it took a couple of months for him to be back to normal but mainly because his immune system is weakened anyway. he also had a high temperature.

my vet said that had it been any of the other horses we probably wouldn't have noticed or it certainly wouldn't have been as bad as it was with mine, trying to keep his body temp right was the hardest part, without a rug he would get a chill, with a rug he was sweating.

Thanks for asking how he is.
Jake seemed abit better when i went up last night and YO called at 8am to say he wasn't "back to normal" at turn out time but certainly seemed better than he did on thursday morning. He was eating, there was dung in his stable ect. Vet had said to turn him out for a few hours this morning, and he dunged when I brought him in. Wasn't as hot and clamy as he was last night, vet said temp was alright today. She gave him another antibiotic jag and he's to stay on 1/2 danilon twice a day. Cough wasn't as bad either.

Just have to keep an eye over the weekend really :(

I am assuming that its probably as a precaution/prevention, often viral infections can turn into bacterial. Or perhaps the vet is just hedging his bets just incase. Either way OP, I hope he makes a swift recovery. and keep him rugged in some way, remember what its like when you are poorly, sweating buckets and shivering cold... poor little man :(
 
Yeah I think it was more a precaution on the vets part, she's very good and is highly thought of .

It's so hard to know what to do re: rug situation. It's really chilly today imo but then I don't think I'm feeling so on top of the world atm lol I've left him with rug on, no neck. will be up to check him tonight again and if he's too hot will just leave him with a sheet on.

He does seem alot brighter in his eyes! Prob sounds really stupid but he looked really dull, no spark almost glazed look. But today looked very aware, was also checking out the vet as she came in with the needle! lol!!

What I meant was not to take rug off completely as he will get cold, if sweating I would put one on to keep warm still but not overheat - I'm sure you knew what I meant OP.

Glad he's slowly perking up, fingers crossed he'll make a full recovery... sending vibes x
