Got a call from dad this morning, Bramble had gone downhill but this time i knew... When i arrived at the kennels she looked me straight in the eyes and we both knew it was her time
i spent an hour sat with her in the lush green grass in the field surrounding the barn where the kennels are. i sat down, she lay on the grass next to me with her beautiful head accross my leg. We sat there in the sunshine and i talked to her about old times, when we picked her up as a pup, about the time on a shoot day she got so tired she parked her bum in the hedge and refused to move and i had to go back and pick her up on the quad an hour later!! She was famous down on the shoot for that particular stunt!! Explained to her all about how she acquired her various nick-names .... Big-B, Fatty Bum-Bum
.... told her i was so grateful for her retrieve of the first ever bird i shot and that it was a privilage to own the most genuine dog in the world. I don't think she took much notice of me but it was still a very special hour to me. Then i could hear dad driving down the field in the gaitor, so i gave her a massive hug and a huge kiss and told her i loved her. When dad arrived i lifted her onto the passenger seat of the gaitor...as they drove away i waved to her and she didnt take her eyes off me until they disappeared around the corner. She was put to sleep at 11.30am.
The vet gave her an examination, said to dad he was 99.9% positive it was cancer of the bowel, or the surrounding area. Dad asked if she was in pain to which he answered no, another 4-5 days and the answer would have been yes.
I waited at the kennels until dad returned with her body, we buried her together under the massive oak tree on her favourite pheasant drive on the Estate, Hanging Wood.
I miss her so much already, rest in peace Bramble, i'll never forget you and the 13 wonderful years we had together, she would have been 14 on 17th July. I hope you never forget us either. Love you always ... see you again some day beautiful girl xxxxxxx
Never forget you xxxx
