My little pony syndrome

Just wondered if they have actually said they are going to rug and over-feed or is this just assumption based on their character? Think we have all got a bit over-excited at times when purchasing new pony and wanting to get all the extras but no evidence as yet that the pony is going to come to harm is there?

I have a little pony. I am nearly 60. Apart from achieving a lifetime's ambition, having wanted a Welsh mountain pony since I was about 6, I also like the fact that I get to play ponies without the risks I feel prone to with bigger horses, and of course the expense. She has a rug ( Cuddly Ponies pink and mauve with co-ordinating headcollar and leadrope) but it is because she is very prone to rain scald. and she's not fat or fed inappropriately. I have a great time with her.

Think people are missing the point here! I have nothing against people having little ponies or loving them. What is wrong is over rugging and over feeding an already overweight pony.
This person is quite an obsessive person and altough loves horses is very nervous of them and wants this pony as a pet.
It does not need rugs or hard feed, but she will buy expensive rugs and feed it up.
It seems I have hit a nerve with some people though, I really thought people were more aware of the danger of over rugging and over feeding hese little native ponies

I think the point is that they haven't even bought the pony and already you are out bitching about them. Concentrate on your own pony's welfare and leave them to it. If you have any real concerns once they actually have the pony speak to the yard owner.

Why don't you offer to clip said pony out, so it doesn't matter if it has a rug on and introduce them to the merits of feeding a low cal balancer.. give her a chance!

Spot on.

Oh my. How dare somebody get a rescue pony to love. How dare they want to buy it expensive rugs and feed it. How dare they be a nervous rider so opt for a non ridden pony! The cheek of it!

OP. You sound like a piece of work. Sorry.

Eta: if you've got concerns. Help her. Offer advise. No one is born knowing how to care for a horse. But bitching about her before she's even got it is out of order IMO.

This
We have 15 Welsh cobs and a Section A gelding, guess who is the only one that is out in a rug

Not necessarily what will happen.
Being 'obsessive' cuts both ways.......

being obsessive can be a way of describing someone who researches long and hard into the best ways to feed ponies, someone who reads the white labels, is prepared to take time and effort (and expense) to give a pony a good life.

being 'obsessive' could be also described as attention to detail - and quite frankly that is what often makes good horse-owners

Ok, without going in to to much detail here, this peron has already had a pony put down due to lammi, caused by over feeding over rugging and no exercise.

I and several others have given advise about this new one not needing rugging and hard feed. This has fallen on deaf ears and rugs have already been ordered and feed choice made.
It will be rugged an fed like a tb and its only 12hh!
From some of your replies on here its no wonder so may get lammi.

Well thank god you are there to help and advise her by writing about her stupidity on an internet forum. A lot of people refuse help from other horsey people because they come across as a know it all - perhaps adopt a softly approach when you're trying to help her, instead of writing about it on here?

In slight defence of the op - I think I know where she's coming from. As a YO for many years I've come across a lot of ladies whose hearts are definitely in the right place, they genuinely love their fluffy ponies/horse and treat them somewhat mis guidedly as pets. Theres nothing wrong with that, but inevitably the animal(s) in question start to get bored (unless they're ancient and happy to retire) and then can become troublesome.
I try to help them avoid the pitfalls and health issues involved, but each to their own I suppose. It can be frustrating because as most of us know, these animals actually like to work. Give 'em a job or they'll go self employed..........

Love the self employed idea , the devil does make work for idle hooves .

I have to say, if you were talking about me on a forum and I found out I would hope for your sake you can run fast!

This, if you are really concerned perhaps offer them some help :)

I own up to having a MLP, he's a welsh A who did a lot of showing in his youth winning some big shows. We have tried trying him out with the others but he looses weight and gets bullied. He lives in most of the winter with a huge stable and gets enough food to feed a 14.2 pony and he can just about survive on that. It's nice giving a big hay net and food knowing that he unlikely to put on any weight. He has a flaxen mane that's about 18inchs long, so he's a true Barbie pony.
The rest of my lot are muddy thugs.
