You had him for a long time & when the vet says it's time then it's time to say goodbye & let him go. I have 2 elderly horses on was 25 years old yesterday & the other is 20 years old. Last Saturday the 25 year old had colic & we had the vet out. We were worried sick, fortunately after a few hours & a couple of jabs he was right as rain & back to his old self. He was ridden for the first time today since the attack, a hack. he really enjoyed himself & he's back to his self. I never told my wife who is his main rider but I found somewhere quiet & had a few tears. Although we have 2 horses, he is our pride & joy.

I hope that was a one off - Harley brought me and my husband together through a mutual friend who realised we would get on really well. We met for a date, and two days later he moved in, that was 2004. He rode Harley infrequently but many times over the years, and has been just as sad as I have.

I just wanted to say that although I haven’t reacted to all your comments, I have read them all and really appreciate your kindness and compassion. I am so lucky to have had him in my life, and I’m incredibly relieved that the night he took ill he was in the paddock next to the house, we heard him and were able to end the pain.

One of the things I will miss the most is the smell of his warm neck under his mane.
