Yesterday I was down my workshop making my Lurcher a new hi viz coat, came in to use the loo and Mum said look in that box in our leanto, there was my mum's much loved cockatiel laying on it's back with it's feet in the air dead as a doornail.
Apparently she'd left the door open of his cage and gone upstairs for a shower, thinking the dogs were down in the workshop with me,she heard squawking and by the time she got downstairs there was feathers from the front room where his cage is, out down the hall to the living room and a body.
Daisy the Lurcher was looking very pleased with herself, you can't blame the dog and I have told Mum not to leave the bird out but it still happened, you just can't trust dogs and other pets on their own can you.
She is so upset as it was her Mum's bird and all she had left, such a sad way to end it's life it was at least 25 years old and I think past it's sell by date so it could not fly as fast as it used to.
Bad day yesterday.

Oh no :( if it's any consolation the bird probably died of shock rather than injuries and probably did not suffer x
Try not to be too mad with Daisy, she's got the chase instinct in her, she probably just wanted to stop the bird moving if she didn't snaffle it and of course with it being so fragile the worst happened.

Sooo sorry to hear about poor cockatiel ! naughty dog !

Friends dog killed her parrot - she had the parrot for years, had just moved to new house - had lots of people round - dog took its chance to knock the cage over - the bottom gave way and he dragged poor parrot out and it was a gonna !!! She has just bought another parrot but she waited until the culprit had passed away (of old age).

Your poor mum, but if the dog wanted it he probably would have got it one way or another in the end.

I'm not mad at Daisy, just sad it had to happen and was so avoidable, mum feels bad and is saying it's her own fault and I think you are right, there were no visible injuries or blood so it probably did die of shock, they are very fragile aren't they at the best of times!
Here's the culprit, looking like butter wouldn't melt

oh dear. :( its a horrible situation to be in. :( Betty did something similar to my best friends very old cat. not nice for anyone involved, but you cant blame the dog- its only doing what's in its nature to do.

dogs eh?!

hope your mum doesnt beat herself up about it too much. accidents happen.

My springer when we first had her, jumped the wall into my sisters and got a young bird that was squarking on her grass, she ran in our house with it, she let me take it off her, and it wasn't damaged at all, she hadn't chomped it, it must have had a heart attack.

My nephews have 2 rabbits (next door) I've explained time and time again that if they leave the gate open between houses and my dog kills the rabbits its not HER fault. Its there father that's the worst culprit, lucking they are usually locked away in their hutch and run, but the other day my dog was acting funny, barking funny barks, my mum went to investigate and the rabbits were out, they'd forced the hutch door, and I said see that's the exact thing I'm worried about, if the gate wasnt' locked she would have got them, not saying she would mean to hurt them but if they run she would chase.

I said she was making sure if she couldn't have them nobody could ! there are 2 big huge cats the other side so I'm sure they would have had them if they were un attended.

I killed my mothers favourite budgie when I was little, I was having a tantrum as I wanted to hoover and I stamped my foot down in temper and trod on poor birdy, she picked him up and he died in her hand, was very sad. Which is why I never hoover lol
