On Monday afternoon, I got the phonecall that we all dread.... my mare was down in the field colicing. She had been fed as usual at three and had been found at four, the vet had been called and was unhappy with her, so she was at the vet hospital by five, where I met up with her. (it had taken me that long to get there from work)

Due to the time, there were loads of vets on the premises as they were doing their end of day bits, so she had 4 vets, a vet student and various nurses swarming around her.

They couldn't feel all they wanted internally, due to her uterus (she is three months pregnant) so scanned her and on the scan saw what needed to be operated on immediately.

I was beside myself, and the vets started swarming even more getting stuff ready for theatre.

She was in theatre by seven.

In theatre they found she had swallowed a piece of wire, which had caused abcesses, peritonitis and perforated her bowel. They removed 2 foot of bowel.

I haven't felt up to posting before now, as she has been critical for the last few days, and also because of what happened to Tam...

But she has turned a bit of a corner it seems now, although I appreciate that she could still go backwards, and is on small feeds etc. she is staying on IV antibiotics for a while due to the peritonitis. bt has pooped and has gut sounds etc.

Yesterday the vet scanned her again to see if she had lost her baby. So far it is still alive and kicking, but obviously we still have a long way to go.

This has truely been a week from hell... and to top it off, I'm moving house on saturday.

I'm just so so thankful that one of the girls on the yard decided to ride on monday afternoon and went to catch her mare, as otherwise I'd not have found her until 8 and that may have been too late.

anyway, here she is tonight. she has lost a lot of weight, and will lose more... not nice to see at all.

she is a walking advert for insurance!

God how scary for you! I'm really glad to hear that she's ok for now and I'm sure it will just be a case of her getting more and more better from now on.

Keep strong x

How awful, even more worrying with her being in foal.

She's looking quite bright in the picture, I hope her recovery goes smoothly and she doesn't cause you too many worries.
