my mare has colic

great news!! sounds like your mare is on the right track now :-) I have had very similar experience ( twice in 8 weeks!) with my mare earlier this year so totally understand. hers was impaction colic once and spasmodic the other. and again if surgery was only option( on the second impaction bout she had) I too would have been forced to take the difficult descision not to proceed, however all is now well,

Take things very slowly with her as she has been through an ordeal, follow vets advice as I'm sure you will but very very sloppy bran mash feeds in small amounts seem to be the way forward. poss look at Yea-Sacc aswell to get her gut back on track - depending on which type of colic vet concludes it was. I've found it very beneficial
I presume in much the same way that we are recommended to give dogs scrambled egg or plain chicken etc when they've been ill, just gently does it on the stomach until all is back to normal
but fantastic news for you and such a relief to hear!!

I have just read poor guido's post about her mare, I'm gutted for them.

Mine is up eating now, she's sipping water and i'm getting regular droppings so fingers crossed now.

She won't touch her soaked feeds (normal speedibeet or new calm and condition) but I tried her with a handful of rolled barley and she went crazy for it, so I tred a bit mixed with water and carrots and she finished it off.

I also put out some chaff (pegasus?) in a bucket to see if she fancied it and she had eaten some last night so that's promising. Gave her a bit more this morning with carrots and she was tucking in. Not sure whether to giver a handful of barley again, she hasn't been fed straights in years but she has perked up no end since I gave her it last night and even whinnied at me coming down the road this morning - she hasn't even held her head up high enough to see me out of the window all weekend.

Have the vet coming to do bloods today so hopefully we'll find out what caused it.

It has been such a harrowing horrible weekend, but hopefully things are on the up.

Badgermyers - no she isn't, although I was considering putting her on it because of her condition. It is possible that the hay is the culprit as it has been so variable, but i'm not ruling out worm damage or liver damage either. The vet's coming to do blood tests this afternoon, so hopefully we'll know a bit more.

I just need to begin building her up, she looks awful.
