My dear little mare is not quite what I would call out and out lame, but isn't sound either.
She is normally a tough cookie - and this is the first time I have ever known her to be off (in 4 years!). She is quite a porker - but is on rations in a very restricted grazing paddock with our porker pony - no hard food. She is out in the restricted paddock over night, in during the day, with hay that is soaked over night.
I rode her on Sunday and she was fine - her usual self. I didn't do anything strenuous at all on Sunday - just a 1hr walk around the roads. When we got home she then went out in her fatties field for the night. She seemed to be fine on yesterday morning (monday)
Last night I went to ride her in the field - I had brushed her fairly thoroughly all down her legs - no heat no nothing. As soon as I got on her she wasn't right - seems to be uncomfortable rather than hopping lame. So I got straight off and took her back to the stables. I let her out in the fatties field and asked to walk around and she almost seemed to not want to put her heel down to the ground on her off hind.
I scrubbed her feet all out and made sure nothing was poking in her feet - but couldn't find anything. I poked and prodded all around her frog and heels, but she made no response at all. Her leg is fine - no swelling, no heat, no sore bits. The only odd thing I found was a slight swelling up just under her foof on the same side she is sore. But again no heat and no apparent pain.
She seemed to be a little easier this morning - but still not right.
So any ideas?
Sorry for the long ramblings - and cookies and a nice big coffee for anyone who gets to the end of this.
