Hi everyone, was hoping for some advice. My 10yo mare Dora is slightly lame. Its a long story so here goes. She lost a shoe, her left foreleg about 3 and a half weeks ago, luckily the farrier was due the next day so brought her in that night as she was chasing about on it. When the farrier came he said she wasnt lame but slightly tender on her left leg. After being shod she was fine and hacked her out each day for a week after giving her a day after she had been shod, after that and she was fine.

The day after I was in the field and she was trotting down the field, which has a slight decline, and she looked awful, however when trotting up the hill she looked sound so I thought I would leave it for a day and see how she was. I put her on rest for the following week and she was sound, so I went out for a hack again and she was sound in walk and trot. However, the following day she didnt look right so decided it was time to call the vet. Got the vet out and intermittently she was trotting up lame and then sound again, which was very strange and turned out it was the right foreleg. The vet said she wasnt very lame however she wasnt quite right, which was aggrivated slightly by the vet flexing her leg.

The vet put her on box rest, however my mare is not very happy in the box and constantly box walks, spins around and bangs the stabble door with her front legs so I turned her out, which she is much happier about. She is on bute at the moment until Monday and then if not sound I will call the vet out again.

Was wondering if anyone else has had this with their horses in the past? Have I done the right thing in turning her back out where she is calmer?

Thanks in advance for your opinions.

the bute will mask slight lameness til about thursday! best toddling around in field than box walking and spinning. might be a slow brewing abcess or deep bruising coming out.
