hi
my mare is currently on a large amount of grazzing and on a skinny side of healthy but doesnt need to gain weigh to quickly as is in very light work.

she gets a mug full of calm and condition in the morning just so i can give her her herbs. she is on a mare fertility as its the only thing that even touches her seasons and helps a little bit. it contains,- black cohosh, damiana, dandelion, dong quai, eluthro, golden seal, kelp, red raspberry, sarsaparilla, slippery elm, uva ursi, valerian, white willow

shes also on naf magic but i dont no if its working as she is still a bit nervous and on high alert all the time. but i dont no if this is cos im not giving her enough.

her grazzing has alot of clover in it and dandilions and some wild flowers.

no idea if anything their was helpful but any ideas for anything that could improve her happyness and contentedness xx

i know some people are going to say you should have a horse if you dont no everything but shush and at least i asked xx

Nobody knows everything, so of course you should ask! I can only speak from my own experience, but calm and condition did exactly the opposite for my mare - didn't condition her and definitely didn't calm her! She is much better on Fast Fibre and Spillers high fibre cubes....good luck!

thanks and it did condition her when she did need it but i suppose now she doesnt but now all i need is a tasty hard feed that does nothing so i can give her any wormers or herbs that she may need without noticing

If she is happy and healthy then I don't see what you should change. As long as she is the right weight and is getting lots of fibre then she should be fine :)

Is she spooky? Because Blue Chips Liquid Karma-thing has worked wonders for my spooky horse in the past :)

shes just a bit angry at the world at the moment. shes nappy on hacks and ears go back more then normal.

We used c&c for our elderly appy several years ago. It can work to put weight back on but I'd suggest taking yours off it now as it is cereal based. We are now keeping weight on our elderly cob with soaked Speedibeet, grassnuts and dried grass chaff with linseed oil. This works very well. I think you need to increase your mare's fibre intake.

Have u tried upping her work rather than changing her diet??

My mare becomes very spooky when she is only in light work coz she has excess energy to burn and that's her excuse.

Maybe if ur mare was in more work it would keep her calmer and more contended?? Just an idea as some horses just thrive on work.

Also found keeping her out 24/7 in the summer helps too if that's an option??

Calm and condition... never used it but looked up the protein and sugar content. 13% starch (which IS sugar), 5% total sugar... so 18% sugar then. Then 12% protien...

Maybe switch to hi-fi lite?

Also clover is high in nitrates which isn't great for horses. You only need to get a simple book to reveal this.

If she's that grumpy with life and problems with her seasons, have u tried having her overies scanned (spelling) there is things they can do such as insert a marble so she thinks she's in foal and if she becomes happier in herself you may find her condition in general pick up.
Just a different approach for you to think about

Oh and forgot to say I wouldn't graze my horses on clover as it will make them very windy and unsettled in their stomachs it really isn't good.

my boy has calm and condition with a massive double handful of alpha a as the vet suggested adding more fibre into his diet to help him put on weight, so he has that twice a day and the improvement has been massive!

we have a lot of clover at my yard and twice every summer my mare has got 'colic' symptoms from it! every time the vet has come out and luckily there has been nothing wrong internally, so think its just where she's got really 'windy' from it, she's being a drama queen and chucking herself on the floor about it!

but all 4 of our fields are full of clover, so not good for her!

to the last comment i, she is on long grass 24/7 so dont no how to up her fibre when she gets as much as she wants. also yes kelly she is out 24/7 from about a month ago till november time, then she will be out 12 hours a day hopefully. also i cant do more work with her at the moment as i dont have time but hopefully i will in a month or 2 xx

hi i havnt has her scanned as she has had the marbles in the past and they havnt worked and regumate doesnt work and various other methods so i tend to just not ask her to work when shes in season. shes a stroppy mare in general but she is just grumpier then usual when in season and out.

Just adding fibre to her feed, some high fi mixed in with the calm and condition will help a little! mine have good grazing 24/7 all year round too!

im sure im just being thick but how does giving fibre to a horse thats eating loads of grass make a differance.
