Wonderful topic I know but Ruby is my first mare and i was just wondering if mares can have effectively blind seasons so far as not at all 'displaying' I only ask as her behaviour change can be very minimal or like today very marked when i think she's in season but I find it very hard to know whether to attribute her behaviour to naughtiness and babyish ways or hormones as I can never tell if shes in season or not. Half of my reason for asking is that it would be useful to be able to know re competition planning etc soooo any other physical signs I can look for or just a fact im going to have to deal with? Thankyou to anyone in advance :)

There are only 2 fail-safe ways of knowing if a mare is in season when she keeps it quiet - one is to scan her - nd the other is to put a stallion in close proximity to her!! Other mares will show to each other and be a total nightmare!

If she doesn't show, then it probably won't affect her in competition - but the best way is to keep a diary of ANYTHING out of the ordinary. If she's 'tricky' for a couple of days every 3 weeks, then it's likely to be due to her being in season!
