Have been absent this last week after my foal announcement.

At 30 hours old little Grace went down with raging enteritis. The vet believes her Mum probably had the bug and passed it on at birth. Peri, thankfully, had fought it off with no symptoms.

Grace was too ill to move to horspital and given a less than 5% chance of survival. Angela and Brian at Holdenfold stud persuaded the vet to let them nurse her there to give her a chance. On day 2 Vet took blood from Peri and spun it down to get the plasma and gave that to Grace . That stopped the diarrhoea in its tracks but she had also developed a small pneumonia. More fluids and antibiotics and she gradually started to nurse. The next hurdle was to see if her guts would recover or if they have necrosed. Poop finally appeared on Friday, much to everyone's delight. Guts are still not 100% settled but she is now on some wonder thing called Biosponge to sort that.

Brian and Angela have nursed her day and night (I live 160 miles away).

Monday, her temp was normal, cannula is now out and chest is clear.
Vid link attached shows how far we have come. Pic link is to some pics I took on Sunday

Still a way to go before she is completely recovered but she is growing well now and hopefully will be ready to come home in the next few weeks.

I was supposed to be selling this foal, but this little lady is now a keeper.

Glad to hear things are improving with your beautiful little girl, hope she continues to thrive.

Love the video and i didn't know Brian could move so fast :D

Brilliant stuff - and how good is your mare, bless her, while little Grace hurtles around with Brian running after her with drip!!! Really hope she goes from strength to strength!! Well done all involved!

Don't really know what to say except ....

Whoop whoop. Whoop whoop. Whoop whoop. Whoop whoop. Whoop whoop. Whoop whoop. Whoop whoop. Whoop whoop. Whoop whoop. Whoop whoop. Whoop whoop. Whoop whoop. Whoop whoop. Whoop whoop. Whoop whoop. Whoop whoop. Whoop whoop.

Good luck and fingers crossed for the future days ahead.

:)

Fantastic, we forget that they are strong lil things deep down!

Not where enteritis is concerned - or any other infection that strikes in the first few days!

Enteritis in such a young foal is the closest thing to a death sentence you want!! HUGE credit to the vet - and most particularly the stud managers - who kept her alive with round-the-clock care! And of course - to Lgd - for being prepared to risk huge vet's bills with very little hope of a live foal at the end of it!

Hopefully, her life will be a little less eventful for the next few years!:D

Well done for having such committment to your foal, hopefully they will reward you in the years to come:)

I owe so much to Brian and Angela.
If they hadn't put their lives on hold and focused on this little one she would not have made it. I doubt either of them any real sleep for the first three days and not much after that for the next two days.

Gracious I wasnt ready for little Grace to start tearing round the stable! just goes to show how resiliant these poorly foals are. And what a brilliant & patient Mum.

Wow, theres some serious dedication gone in to getting her better - i hope everything goes well with her from now on. Loved the video clip of her cantering/bucking around the stable with Brian in hot persuit holding the drip up!!!!!!! :D

Oh bless her! And a huge well done to all involved for getting her to the stage where she can be giving me a heart attack gallooping round mum with a catheter and drip attached!! (and a bloke in a boiler suit!!)
Mum is super chilled, my lady follows baby everywhere at the mo, even if it means spinning round in a circle!!
Fingers crossed everything keeps going well now! xxx

What a lovely vid, and I take my hat off to those carers, they are the sort of people who deserve a medal.
wish you all the best for the future.

She is a little miracle. Pretty baby Grace. Wishing her a speedy and full recovery.
Full of admiration for the dedication and skill of the vet and stud managers.
