Got up at 8:30am and went to ride my 3 year old. Hadn't ridden her for probably over a week! Didnt do anything specific just walked, trotted and had one small canter, the length of the field. There was some scary farm machinery left in the bottom of the field so I got her to walk past it both ways without too much of a fight! She felt a bit strong today, so I did lots of halts and transitions. Tomorrow I'll go in the field with her again and try a bit more cantering. All in all rode for about 45 minutes. I was actually wearing jodphurs today -not like me, I always wear jeans with chaps, note to self: dont wear jodphurs tomorrow, werent comfortable and werent as grippy on the saddle like my jeans are. Strange how I feel more confident in different clothing... lol

Need to concentrate on my position more and not keep looking down at her so much!!

Pointless post i know....

so anyone who is out and about and doing is, in my view, very virtuous and to be revered

I'm usually still asleep at this time and wouldnt normally get up till noon!

I always read your posts, catching up on how you are doing. Your mare is very, very pretty, how lucky are you?

I wanted to ask you a question I would normally know the answer to but perhaps your mare is different, I am sure there are exceptions in the horse world and she is probably one of them.

I wondered, if she was only 3 in April, so really, just 3, you seem to be working her quite a lot. You may not be but this is how I read it. You said you rode for 45 mins this morning. I always thought a youngster wasn't really mature, muscles and things until 4 and if started earlier would be turned away until about that age.

Thank you so much! I am very very lucky and I love her lots!

I got her when she was 2 years old, one time when the vet came out to inject her I asked his opinion on how she was looking in weight, size etc and he actually said something along the lines of by the look of her growthwise you could actualy start riding her now...I never did though. (she was over 16.1hh when she was 2)

I did sit on her once a month when she was 2 to 3, but thats all i did because she was huge!! She is so dopey and chilled its brilliant, she even took her first steps with me on board on her own initiative to look round the corner of the stables i used to be at to see what the noise was that someone was making.

So anyway, nothing too serious at that age. She turned 3 in april so for a few weeks I started riding her for no longer than 15 minutes so she could develop muscles to help carry my weight and since then Ive been building it up slowly, not rushing, not pushing her etc. I feel she is happy and wants to experience new things already!! I dont ride her everyday, just probably 3-4 times per week (with the exception of the last week)

I am glad I did what I did when she was 2 years old (sat on her for a few minutes once a month and long reined her) as I think if i hadve left it til she was over 3, nearer to 4 then I think with her size I probably wouldve had problems (behavioural/unrulyness)

People say they dont think i ride her as much as i should. i dont really listen to peoples opinions unless its something im doing drastically wrong, I just goe by how I feel the horse is feeling, coping and developing etc.

I last measured her last year and she stood at 16.3hh, so i reckon she is now 17hh. I am 6ft tall so Im glad she is as big as she is! xx

Am i going on a bit too much lol x

well i wish i was riding but no i am at work sitting ina an office air con on blast looking out the window wishing i was else where!

Thanks for that, I thought there was an explanation but as I have never been in your position, didn't know it. Your mare sounds wonderful and your ethos of doing what you feel is right is how I do things, sometimes there are definitely exceptions to the rule. It sounds like you have a very, very special relationship with your baby girl, well done you. xxx Oh, and you didn't go on - you are obviously a very proud mummy xxx
