To those of you remember, I posted a couple of weeks ago about my whippet Nonny who after having been fine for 15 months, suddenly decided that she needed to wee in her bed (in her cage) every night. I thought it was because the weather had changed and the clocks gone back and she did not like the cold at night. I had her checked by the vets, and no issues there, so decided to change things to see if I could get her behaviour changed back, as the chinese laundry look was starting to drive me up the wall.

I spoke to Cayla and we decided to try a smaller bed in her cage. I put the divider in her cage, and a small bed with high sides which means she has to curl up to sleep. The bed fills the cage. I always cover the cage at night with a blanket.

I put her outside at 10.30 and stand and wait until she wees. That was taking 10 mins as she really does not like being watched, but by confining her to a smaller area in the yard and refusing to let her in until I have seen her wee I have got her to do it each night. Then straight into her cage with its smaller bed.

And it has worked..... 7 nights running she has been dry, and now I can trust her to wee without me watching her at night. Nonny is once again socially acceptable :) :)

Flodden of course has never done anything wrong and his halo continues to shine :)
 
well done.....i also have to watch my lurcher otherwise she just walks round the path and comes straight in without doing anything......and then decides she needs a wee at 3 am!!!!!!!!!! its even worse if its raining as she doesnt really want to go outside the back door!!!!
 
Hurrah, great news! My lurcher doesn't really like going out last thing if the weather is bad and I am not always sure she has performed! But she must have an enormous bladder because she always lasts till morning thank goodness!
 
Nonny has an enormous bladder, she will happily go all day 12 - 14 hours without a wee. It had just become a habit following the clock change and cold weather. Habit seems broken now. Just in time to go away for a week at Christmas.
 
Oh jolly well done to you. So frustrating when they do this sort of thing. My little IG was the same as your dog about "going" in the garden at night. When I first had her I spent many hours after midnight in our garden until she finally gave in and went. Thankfully once the penny dropped things improved there but it still didn't stop her from wetting (or worse) the bed if the mood struck. All nerves and she still is very nervous. We were her 3rd home in less than 3 years so no wonder really. She has worries about all sorts of things, currently it is the open fire, she was fine with it last winter but this year it is the devil's work! Dogs eh??
 
Must be a whippety lurcher thing, as to pee outside in the dark and cold is simply God-Human cruel, obviously!! And to be watched OMG, beyond cruel. Mine is currently outside - looking in, and wondering why I'm not letting her back in... same as every other night in history. Go pee you peanut brain!!
And, considering she has the whole kitchen every night, when she is poorly, or has 'an accident', why can't she just make the mistake by the door, it is always in her bed!!

But, well done Nonny!!!! (and you, and Cayla for hard work achieved!)
 
Aw bless! Hope it continues well haha. My whippets are 9 and 11 yrs old and you still have to drag them outside and watch them...and they still try and sneak past you without going...and if they manage to trick you into think they really don't need to go after all, they get you up at 5am crying to be let out :rolleyes3:

Well done Nonny! If you all you lurcher/whippet owners think they are the only ones that hate the dark/cold wet etc may I introduce you to the Great Dane who has all the same hatreds BUT you cannot drag them anywhere!
 
My lurcher often refuses to pee in the rain and if it's still raining the next morning he won't get out of bed. He can hold it for around 24hrs so his bladder must be enormous!
