Well my youngster hasn't done a lot really... she was mouthed lightly backed at 3/3 months then turned away until the next year... then was just hacked a few times a month, did a pleasure ride and then an intro dressage test at local riding school... then turned away again, this year I decided to get her fit ( cue a bit more hacking and some hill work) then get started on some jumping, so we have had a couple of sj lessons which she was ok but seemed as though she backed off etc (also indoor school) so decided to bite the bullet and join the xc clinic with a local eventer.... best thing I did.. she was fab, carried me in looked for fences and was so keen and seemed to really gain confidence, she ended up giving other horses leads into the water !! she jumped the trakehner with no hesitation and did the drop into water and jump out no bother.... also popped down the steps and did a small rail ditch rail !! very happy mam !

Aww thats great she did so well first time out, nothing like having a brave baby I dont think i could stick something that had to look at everything all the time!

There are some stupid people on this forum that will definatly report your pictures even though you have got permission and admin I find are totally useless and will just blindly take them down (the admin on this forum is the worst iv ever come across)

but lets hope that for once no one does as they are lovely photos! :)

Good luck with her!

Actually I think the rules are that images with watermarks are not allowed due to advertising, so if admin sees them / they are reported, I imagine they will be deleted regardless.

thanks and I have put photographers details on as hopefully they will check him out before button pushing lol

she actually carried me into them much better than I had thought...just a couple where she got excited and I got left behind...but much prefer her to look and still jump than to rush or back off etc...was soooo pleased I was beaming all day !!

well funnily enough I did on first jump and the instructor told me not to !... he said that I should keep soft which I did...you will notice the bits not pulling (only on the one I got left behind)... but he said riding into a fence with a baby then throwing reins forward is pretty much abandoning her at the fence... I also think pics don't show true reality of jump as looked at wfp and lucinder fredericks and some pics there elbows are way behind...fast forward to next frame and the hands give lol :)

Lovely pony and pics but GIVE the reins over the fence! Chuck you hands forward and allow the neck. Promising start.

Agree with this, didnt notice myself at first but the last photo is pretty bad and the bit is being pulled , but then again i think your not leaning up enough in that photo so that could be the reason.
You do need to give a bit more but as your instructor says dont fling the reins at her either you have to get the balance just right!

does anyone have any opinions n the breed question?. I only ask as I have no idea about warmbloods etc altho have heard they are slow growers... she has been a very slow grower and is still only 15.2 passport said she should mature to 16.2 (I know wont happen) but as warmbloods grow slower (or so I am told) might there be hope ??

you are right because I was left behind in that shot ... I know my position is not fab but come on its her first ever time xc and only 3rd time jumping...she came away very enthusiastic and I am chuffed and heres a pro getting a shot in a bad position ... we cant always get it right(especially on a baby )

oh and another... see pics aren't always perfect just a moment.. yes im not fab but I didn't jab or stop her with hands or instructor would have told me!

If I could post a vid I would then you could see she wasn't restricted over jump only when I got left behind... and im sure wev all had that happen once... especially with a baby whos not sure of the take off yet !!

thanks for the comments tho....I was already prepared for the back lash lol

oh heres another of me completely getting left behind !! couldn't resist but I don't think im killing her mouth in the process I do try and slip the reins... my instructor said after this jump... don't worry its much better this happens than u be up her neck so she cant take off comfortably !!

I have lots to work on I know but completely chuffed with the mares whole attitude, sorry if I seem a little neurotic but after reading lots on h@ h u need to be prepared for the major downer everyone seems to have !!

I don't think anyone was particularly having a go just a bit of constructive criticism. She's a lovely looking mare who looks scopey and confident but being caught in the mouth may put her off. Its not just the picture where your left behind but in most of them you're not quite releasing enough for her to stretch fully over the jump. We're all guilty of it at some point and its better its resolved now whilst you have a happy keen girly. :)

Well just because im not throwing my reins up her ears doesnt mean im jabbing her in the mouth !! As the day progressed and she relaxed and got more consistent with the take off it was a little better sit with her but hey ho tbh i rode her i didnt feel i was restricting her and neither did instructor we were both pretty pleased lol !!

Stunning mare! And im not even a fan of coloureds! If its any consolation you jump way better than me, i gave up trying years ago! Re breeding i think warmblood x tb/cob looks about right :)

My intructor says the exact same thing for when i jump i never throw my hands up his neck because we find it opens doors for him to tank off after jumps and he is alot sensible when i dont throw my hands up his neck. (he is 14 now lol)! Lovely horses and lovely riding!

You dont need to " throw your reins at her ears" - you just need to release a bit more - think one third of the way up her neck so she can stretch over a fence & not be as restricted.

Lovely mare, seems super keen.

I do know I have loads to change jumping to to be fair it was her first time... and I wasn't sure how shed react to the jumps etc I do need to release more I know but I wasn't jabbing her, anyhow I just posted as was just really happy with her and hoped I might get feedback on the breeding.

:)

Oh thanks for the input on breeding... I have had a few people ask if she has trotter in her.

I know nothing about trotters !! But I don't think so

The examples of the pros you have used are actually showing a very soft arm- the forearm is in line with the rein and the elbow is soft so is allowing forward. This means he can land over the skinny and turn quickly to the next element.

In some of your pics You have very hard arms- your elbow is bend and fixed, you are balancing on her mouth in the air. Your choice, but your lovely little horse wont wish to carry on jumping long term if you're using her mouth to balance.

The pics of pro's aren't remotely similar to your own. Look at the horse's neck and shape to see how it can stretch of the fence and compare it to your own.

I think she is beautiful, lovely pics and she looks like she is really enjoying it. Absolutely not a criticism as I like to be able to feel some level of contact, but I would perhaps provide a couple of inches more, if you look at the pics, she isn't able to fully bascule over the jump, although she is almost there, so I'd maintain the contact, but giving a couple more inches with your hands and she will bascule fully over the jump and as her kneck stretches forward it will take up that couple of inches in the reins. With babies, its always better to be a little less restrictive than to run the risk of being over restrictive.

She really is a cracking little mare though, I'm really glad you had a good day :)

What a beautiful mare! I don't usually like coloureds (or mares!) but she is really lovely and so thrilling when they take everything new in their stride :):)

My, aren't people quick to criticise!:confused::( I don't have many views on her breeding but she could easily be a WB/TB/cob cross or even WB/TB? I had a friend with a trotter x whose difficulty mastering canter was the giveaway rather than the conformation. Good luck with her!

like I said though its a snap moment...my instructor would not stand there and watch if I was keep pulling jabbing her mouth.... I do know I need to release more...... I get it lol.... but the point of post was just a happy one we had a fab day !! And the only question I did ask was about breeding !!

You appeared to me to be asking for CC in the C&T version of the thread. Your horse is avoiding being socked in the mouth by not stretching. A moment in time photo can tell you more than the instructor standing beside you I'm afraid, I know it does for me when I pull apart videos of my lesson.

It's amazing isn't it - I can watch a video and think well overall not bad, and then I'll take a few stills of about 15 seconds worth and and suddenly have a list of at least 10 things to work on. :D

eh not to steal OPs lime light ... but i do the total opposite and creap my hand further up the neck then needed as im paranoid about gobbing the horse.

What is worse ?

I get it I need to release more ... I need to release more.... I need to release more... !!

Ok I shall make sure next time arms are up neck.

Oh and post lots of pics :D

I just hope I haven't damaged her too much already !!
