This is my 17hh 14yr old ex racehorse.this is his second time schooling with me as i havent had him long. I know he needs alot more topline but we are working on it! My question is, i was thinking of putting him in some HOYS ROR qualifiers, but i dont want to spend 50 quid a class to get laughed out the ring! Im a complete amateur when it comes to HOYS etc so would oike to know some opinions ! Thanks for reading my post :)

He looks to be working pretty well already. The muscle and topline will come with consistency. I'd look to be doing some unaff with him first, build him up gradually and see how well he takes to it, and see how well the judges take to him (take whatever CC they throw at you, work on it and give yourself HOYS qualifiers to aim for when he's fit, muscled up and has a few unaff under his belt). I'd also invest in a good/experienced showing instructor who will guide you in the right direction.

Firstly make sure he qualifies for ROR. Then why don't you start with some local ROR classes first and see how you get on? I cant see the point in throwing yourself in at the deep end if you worried about rejection, start with local shows and work your way up. You will find it much more enjoyable

Will they strip him as his back confo without saddle may go against him. If it helps a friend has a 26yr olf tb with back confo like this, still doing pleasure rides, no issues, never held her back (was born that shape) but she wouldn't win any in-hand class. She does a lot of slow conditioning work with her to build her core so she carries herself well.

Yes he is registered with ROR, he raced for 8 years! And he is very high withered, i think conformation is good but im used to natives not tbs! His physio said when he has muscled up he wont look as bony on top (he has very little muscle along his back). I need to try and find some local ROR classes as they dont seem to do many round my way (peterborough) unless im just not looking in the right places! haha! Thanks for all your opinions so far, i thrive from constructive criticism. Getting some lessons with a professional dressage rider just to tidy up my riding, and will maybe look to going to some showing clinics or something!

Spend a year doing normal ROR showing classes so you can build up the required muscle, get him going correctly and you know what you are doing. No point in spending a fortune until you know you are ready and your horse can cope with a ring of 20-30horses all cantering round together.

he looks a nice sort but at 14 he would be against horses 10 years younger. I personally would do a year at local shows and then look at it again. He would then be 15 and could do the olympia qualifiers which is focused less on the conformation etc but how well the horse is looking and moving for its age and type of work that it has been doing during its lifetime
