My new boy (vetting permitting)!

Very sweet, does he have a scar on his bottom? Looks a very genuine type.. good luck. Look forward to hearing more! :)
 
He's a Welsh section D, 11 years old, 15.1 and very smart looking. He's been in Portugal for 5 years so is acclimatised to the heat (although understandably is not keen on flies). Vetting next week so fingers and toes crossed :)
 
Hmmm. Well, he passed the vetting (not got the report yet, just a verbal from the friend/instructor who went with the vet) but it seems he has mild COPD. He didn't cough during the examination and the owner - who seems to be very honest - tells me the only attack he's had in the 5 years she's had him was after some substandard hay. My friend, who is very experienced, doesn't seem to think there's a problem; he'll be fine out 24/7 and will need his hay soaked but otherwise it's just a matter of being aware of it.

Given that I'm a 'happy hacker' with no interest in competing, hunting, fast work etc what do you think?
 
Talk it through with the Vet if you are worried.

He/she passed the horse for hacking and the way that you will keep him should suit him. I would personally go ahead with the purchase (if the horse is perfect for you in every other way). :)
 
I noticed he was coughing when he was trotted up for you. Did he cough much when you were riding him?. For me it would depend on how much his living conditions would affect him e.g. stabled, bedding used, forage feeds tolerated etc. Can your vet help with any prognosis?
 
I'd say go for it. I'm "just" a happy hacker, my horse has had it ever since I've had him, never been a problem when managed correctly ( like you said steam/soak hay etc ).
He looks a handsome lad!

The cough when he was trotted up was due to him inhaling a piece of apple! :) He was find when ridden. I'm pretty such I will go ahead but I'll talk to the vet who looked at him and also to my local vet to be on the safe side.

I think he's lovely and I wouldn't be overly concerned about the COPD especially if he is going to be living out and passed the vetting for what you want to do with him. My YO's gelding has COPD which has gotten worse in the last few years (he is in his late 20s though) but is fine so long as he's out and hay is soaked. It never stopped him when he was younger - he used to SJ against the Whitaker kids according to his owner!
