Well new as in I've had him about 3 months now, but have only just got round to taking some pics of him! He's an 8 year old 15.3hh tb ex racehorse who I got through Scarlett on here. He's by Royal Applause out of a Warning mare.

I've not really managed to do as much with him as I would like, mainly because it took about 4 weeks to get him a saddle sorted, then we moved them and so we mostly hacked for another 3 weeks or so, then he lost his front shoes....and so on....but shoes are back on now and we are riding again. Have started focusing on schooling him and have found the buttons to press so things are moving in the right direction. I must start having some lessons on him, as due to one thing or another just haven't got round to it. No ones of me riding him (OH thinks standing around with a camera whilst I ride is VERY boring)....but cc welcome:

Also, when I got him he had a cut on his hock and just my luck he developed cellulitis. Anyhow, we are left with this lump, which doesn't affect him in any way however it wasn't there pre-cut....any ideas on what it could be? I wondered whether he something in it and his body had walled it off or something? Pic, its the right hock on the outside at the bottom:

Nice horse. Did you cut his mane with scissors?

(i would too if he doesnt like pulling!)

The lump is probably scar tissue or could be extra bone if the cut was from hard trauma such as a kick. only way to tell is to x ray

I did indeed use scissors....lets just say I went to pull his mane, then changed my mind pretty quickly when he tried to kill me! I couldn't even thin it with my fingers!

The lump doesn't bother him, he's perfectly sound on that leg, just curious really. If it does start to cause problems I will probably get an x-ray.

I have a TB mare who hates having her mane pulled so I use a human hair razor to do hers (Boots sell them). You can thin with them too and not get that 'cut' look. Mind you I've just done my girl's mane with scissors but beinbg an ex hairdresser I also 'chipped' into it so it looks less blunt. Not criticising by the way just giving you ideas!

Nice boy though and when he starts working properly his neck will build up a bit more topline. However I never do CCs in case I'm talking poo!

Hedgewitch - I will try and get one of those, I used to use an old clipper blade on difficult horses but its blunter than blunt! I did cut up into it, but it was one of those 15 minute jobs...and to be fair I'm much better at pulling than wielding a pair of scissors!!

I've been concentrating on working him from my leg into my hand so he's working quite long still, the outline is coming on slowly and certainly our schooling sessions are getting better...so hopefully in a few months he will have a bit more topline!

No cc from me but he does have the sweetest little face and is super shiny, looks very content. My ex racer absolutely hates having his mane pulled, so much so that when I bought him it was the only thing I was warned he didn't like and could be quite nasty about. With time he has accepted me using a mane comb and a solo comb as long as I dont back comb it before I press the blade. I comb it through first then just trim with the solo comb to keep it tidy, a bit unconventional but it works for us.

My mare has now got a lump on the canon bone under her knee on the outside just like yours on the back leg. I was told it was a bruise to the bone caused by a kick, it will take alot longer than muscle to heal and unfortunately she'll always have a lump there now but it should go down somewhat in time. I'm using compagel from the vets to try (in vain likely!!) to reduce the size. Thank goodness she's not a show horse!!

Lovely boy though, by the looks of his muscle tone he hasn't been out of training for too long??

With the mane pulling try rubbing oil of clove on the skin by the roots, this numbs the skin (so use gloves when applying it!!) and pull only small amounts at a time.

Thanks everyone, yes he is a sweety but he does have his moments on rare occaisons! He doesn't get any special treatment though, I just treat him like he's just any other horse, and he's living out 24/7!

He last raced July 08, was then hacked by a neighbour until about April/May time when he ended up back on the training yard, then I got him in June.
