I have recently purchased a fantasic 16.2 Tb who has novice evented. 2 days after we bought him he was running round the field with my other 2 horses and he slipped in the wet onto his side. After checking him over there was no lameness etc. Over the past 2 weeks he has been scuffing his near hind hoof to the extent that he has taken the front off of his hoof. My farrier is v.concerned and shoeing will soon be an issue. I have had the chiro out to see him and she is returning on wednesday. However she seemed to thtink she may have solved the problem when she visited yesterday. Has anyone got any suggestions to what he may have done. I am hoping it is nothing more sinister like a mild fracture etc. Just woprried about my new chap!
Thanks

If they've put their backs out a bit, scuffing a hind hoof is really common. One of the signs I look for, in fact!
Often occurs if the pelvis is out of alignement, which he is more than likely to have done when he slipped. I'm sure he'll be right as rain in no time, and you did the right thing getting a back person!

Thanks! i had the back lady out yesterday and she did what she does best. she is coming for a second check up on wed. just concerned me he was still doing it today after being treated yesterday.

My boy was doing that when he had rotated pelvis/sacro illiac problem.... which aparently is most commenly caused by them losing thier back legs under them or a slip or fall...

They are often a bit sore after chiro and might even seem worse initially - you sometimes need to give it two or three days before seeing improvement... so, fingers crossed!

The chiro should be able to advise you exactly what she found was wrong though and how quickly you should expect to see improvements..... but you will probably have to ask... not all of them explain what they are doing etc....
