Went to fetch my horse in tonight and he was standing by the gate waiting for me. It is about a 5 minute walk away. As I was approaching he put one of his legs through the gap in the gate about 3 bars up, and took it out easily and near enough straight away. I walked faster when he reared up and put his front legs on top of the 5 bar gate. I shouted to him and he got down straight away easily with minimum effort. I'm asking the YO if he could put some electric tape in front of the gate to stop him doing it again. I was shocked as he's a big hairy cob and I didn't think he was that athletic.

My boy does this all the time when he wants to come in. He sticks his hoof through the metal gate and bashes it up and down. Used to give me a heart attack thinking he was going to get it stuck but in 8 years he never has, its just a way of showng me he wants to come in NOW. I don't take any notice now, he knows exactly what he's doing.

We had a hunter on our yard that did a similar thing, but he panicked and managed to take the gate off its hinges, and drag it accross the field. He had some nasty leg injuries.

F does the same thing when he is bored. Best thing is to ignore him and walk away because if I pay him too much attention he doubles the stupid antics! Can't say it's easy though!

Maybe he does do it reguarly, iin his previous home. Stop it if you can, I know a welsh D who managed to get its leg entangled through the bars of a gate (not idea how), firebrigade had to cut her out, somehow she survived (pulled all the sking down, like she was wearing a wrinkly sock that needed pulling up. Permanent nerve damage, ruined her (to date successful at county level) show career, only used for hacking. Hope you can get the eleccie tape up.

Silly horse! That would have me panicking too i think. My sister's old horse reared up over the gate once I thing. Not nice! You can get soem gates with wire mesh over the gaps. One of ours has this but only on the lower rungs I think. However, if not you land then I think the electric fence idea may be the best. It's fine if they are not a panicker. - my sister's current horse has on various occasion got his feet stuck in the sheep fencing in our field (we've removed most of it now) Once he had both stuck in (wire between his shoe and foot but thankfully just stood there calmly until he was cut out!

They do do the daftest things. Always think it's more idiotic when they have plenty of open field to graze in yet they decide they want to be on the other side of any fence/gate!

I'm not going to scaremonger but you big time need to stop that. Can you approach from a different side?

Its because he wants to come in/see you. My 2 year old used to jump into the yard (jump is a bit of an overstatement) when I was mucking out. She did huge damage to gate and herself. I solved it by changing the way I led her into the yard.
