My Obese horse - (follow on from the other day..)

I asked for referances, not weblinks, I have an old fashioned belief that peer reviewed research is the best way to improve knowledge on subjects such as the incidence and aetiology of ulcers in equines (and people if it comes to that :) )

Whoa, chill your beans YorksG, I was tring to be helpful by looking on the web for you...I don't think I quite needed the big worded rant chucked at me.
I'm trying to defend quite allot of blows from all directions on here tonight...it's a brave person that trys to leave a comment on here this evening!!!
Why's everyone gunning for eachother, cor blimey...

I think the OP has done very well to realise she has a potential problem and take advice on it.

Some horses are almost impossible to get weight off but live perfectly healthy lives above the ideal weight. As do some people. Its a fact of life that nothing is ever going to be perfect.

Quite chilled thank you :) I'm sure you were trying to be helpful, and btw that wasn't a rant :) (can do a rant if required :D) The point is you weren't really expressing an opinion that I could see, more defeending another posters position (which any one can do of course) which I was still answering, so sort of answering you both :)

I was trying to say that who knows where this person got their info from, it was a statment made, rightly or wrongly and maybe they haven't got evidence to back it up, maybe it was just something they knew. Maybe they were told it many years ago...who knows but maybe it's up to you to prove them wrong rather than demand evidence.
Look, I really don't care. I don't know any of you but that last person seemed to be getting bombarded by quite a few people (not sure why, I'm sure they didn't steal your first born from you) and I tried to see the post from their point of view rather than being another person to use quote marks to pick out the parts of someones comments that offended me.
It just seems very hostile in here tonight...maybe because Murry is out of the tennis or because it's hot?!!?

I may 'know' that chesnut horses should only be turned out at full moon, but would expect to be challenged on the 'fact' if I were expounding that theory on an open forum and explaining how that was better for someones horse than other options :)

Nope, you've lost me there, either your drunk or over tired...eitherway I think we have both taken over the OP's post and should let it go...
You scurry off and prove people right or wrong and I'll try and fight my way out of this paper bag that has been shoved on my head.
I was trying to help you by looking on the Internet and look at another persons post without picking holes in it.
Good luck by the way OP, I'm sure the weight will drop off ;)

Neither drunk or over tired, merely trying to illustrate a point in terms I thought you would understand. I have very little knowledge about gastric ulcers in people, perhaps you should google the causes of them?

Sorry, one last thing YorksG...do humans get ulcers due to the same reasons as horses. Just you mentioned it earlier and my friend thinks he's got one... Is it lack of fibre?

Haha, 2 funny x

To the OP, I think its really good you found out your facts by getting the vet in.
We have about 45 horses at our yard, I would say very few would score 5, most would be 6-7 because for all the will in the world, its been spring and now is summer !!

To those who think its so easy to maintain weight, I'd like to state the following:
My YO's dictate paddock size, I have asked my horses not to each much grass, but they take little notice!
I am a mother, work, and have 4 horses - I do need to sleep also, so having the time for loads of extra work just isn't possible, same for many people. My horses already take about 35 hours a week of my time, ie a full time job!
Most people are in the same boat, basically we do our best and if it was so damn easy, there wouldn't be lots of grossly fat ponies around.

I agree about the ones where no effort is made, there are 2 highlands at my yard and both are grossly fat, its a crying shame but one hasn't been ridden since arriving months ago, and the other has a 10 min walk at the slowest pace in the school maybe once per week - its folk like them that need a kick up the rear to understand they are seriously neglecting their horses health.

But most of us with ponies a bit podgy, do but the thought, the time and effort in.
I think the OP is doing good and all she can x
