My OH - brave, or foolish?

We're off on holiday tomorrow - we're going camping on the Gower peninsula in Wales - and my OH said the other day, 'We should go riding while we're there!'

Anyway, I was not about to let that one drop, so I went straight away and found a nice trekking centre near our campsite. They offer two types of 'experience' - a three hour hack, or a full day's riding with a pub lunch halfway through the day. Excited by the prospect of drinking a beer on horseback (or at least, slightly prior to it!), my OH said, 'ah, the full day is much better value - let's do that!' So I booked it

Now, he has not ridden for YEARS - he did some RDA stuff when he was little, but he is now 31 so has been out of the saddle for at least 20 years! I did put him on Ellie once (when I had tired her out completely) and, leaning very much on his hands and gripping frantically with his knees, he walked her around the field - on the lead rein

He said to me, 'I can ride! I did the what-do-ya-call it, gymkhana stuff, when I was eight or nine!' - so when the lady asked me how experienced we both were, I wrote:

Boyfriend: TOTAL NOVICE

And he cannot understand why my family - all of whom are horsey - keep rolling around in fits of laughter when he states loudly that a day in the saddle will NOT crucify him and make his legs ache. He maintains the whole 'I'm fit and healthy, why should sitting on a horse all day tire me out?' facade....oh my word, I cannot wait to see his bow legs when we finish our ride!

Although having said that, I am a little nervous. Considering we are going riding on Monday, and our holiday does not finish till Thursday, is he going to be too crippled to walk around and sightsee on the remaining three days?

Oh yes, and a quick question - what should I make him wear!? He only has jeans, so I guess it will have to be that, but feet wise he's a bit limited in terms of what he can wear, as one of his feet is not as it should be. He has CAT boots which he wears for work - they have a heel, so do you think they'd be ok?

I would think his CAT boots would be ok, as long as the stirrups are wide enough to accept his feet without getting wedged.
Please can you take some pics of him when he gets off? I would love to see the look on his face! lol!

Hope you enjoy your holiday and that boyfriend manages to stay on board!

Thank you!

I had wondered about the width of his boots - I might put my old pair of Ariats in as well, just in case (we have the same size feet!)

Oh yes, there will be pictures, I promise. I'm not letting him escape having a permanent memento of his foolishness!

Oh lord, if I even mention jogging bottoms he has a hissie fit! I tried to explain to him that horseriding is not overly fashionable, but he wont listen
smirk.gif

Dont forget tight pants or boxers under their jeans/trousers, Ive lost count of the times my sons have complained that they had 'sat on a b*ll'! Lol x

I *think* that's one of the better ones, from what I've been told. Never been there myself but not heard anything bad about it. I was worried you were going to where I used to work *shudders* before I was with the scurry ponies - it's, how can I say, not the best run place
smirk.gif

Have you explained to OH about the need for, ahem, male support?
wink.gif

oooh can you PM me the name of the place? As there was another one I was considering - would be interesting if it was that one!

I will stress the need for 'stability', but I doubt I will be listened to....

Oh wonderful, good to speak to people who know of it!

I just hope I dont get another Shire

That's what I was given when Mum and I went on holiday last year, purely because I am heavier than I look

A whole day, eh? That's brave.

Two completely non-horsey friends of mine are away on their honeymoon soon and have discussed a day of trail riding . . . on their HONEYMOON!!! I REALLY hope we have convinced them otherwise! We used pretty persuasive arguments.
wink.gif

We went riding on the beach in Wales earlier this year and my novice rider OH (just cantering) coped quite well. The had toe caps on the stirrups so proper boots were less of an issue. I think I was more irritated as the saddle I had didn't fit me well at all!

Now you see, I spoke to someone the other day who actually spent their honeymoon riding - also in Wales - they hired two horses and rode about 40 miles, stopping off every night at scheduled places where they could sleep and turn the horses out. They loved it, even though everyone thought they were barmy!
grin.gif

Interesting what you say about the steel toe caps - I have just read on the website that trainers are fine, so they cant be that worried about footwear!

What campsite are you staying at hun? As you know I used to live on Gower. Parc-le-breos was OK when I was down there.

Not sure yet - I am currently using my work time to research the area! If anyone has any suggestions, I'd be most grateful!

I thought you might be lol! South Gower is far more picturesque than North Gower. Make sure you walk the Worm's Head, visit LLangennith Beach (that's where I used to live) and if you go walking on any of the commons/moors (esp the landward side of Rhosilli Down) be very careful of the bogs!! Berry and I nearly disappeared in one once

I'm very envious!! Make sure you take LOTS of pictures won't you!! If Berry is fit enough, I'd like to take him back there for a holiday next year.

Well all I can say is thank you HHOers - without you all, I wouldnt have known about it in the first place!
smile.gif

I can almost guarantee that everywhere you go, that a horse and rider could possibly go, Berry and I have!! Even the really long steps up off Oxwich Bay (the next beach west of Three Cliffs). At the opposite end of Llangennith Beach to Worm's Head is a headland called Bury Holmes - we've dodged and clambered amongst the rock pools to get up there and even ridden out to the light house off Whitsands (was an esceptionally low tide and actually a bit foolish

). If you want to ride on the beach, the best beach is definitely Llangennith - http://www.piltonmoorstables.co.uk/

Oh wow, thanks for that link - it looks like the kind of thing we might be looking for in a year or two, when Mum also has a horse! As I would love nothing more than to be able to take Ellie on holiday with me

Riding to the lighthouse sounds amazing!
