my OH has servere asthma & eczema. Now I've got my own horse I'm finding it difficult to cope. I have to get showered & changed & wash my clothes as soon as i get home or it effects him. He now cannot go in my car as it is like a stable and smells! I also feel guilty that I'm making him unwell.

It wasn't as bad when i rode other people's horse as i was not out 2 times a day doing horses!

it has been my dream to own my own horse but now feel upset that it has effected my OH so badly.

Does anybody else have this problem?..... any advice?

My son is and he takes alot of piriton! I dont go near him until im washed and changed in the evening. They do build up against it so it does get better with time, if he doesnt mind!

Sadly I had a 'other half' many years ago with the same problems and can sympathise with you

He was so bad that he ended up in hospital with an Asthma attack ...... sadly we went our separate ways, partly due to this ..... as my horse came first

I hope this does not happen to you tho

When I first started riding as a child, I was badly allergic to horses. But I persevered (with the help of piriton) and built up an immunity, totally fine now.

Perhaps he should take a piriton and come up to the yard with you, then he might build up a resistance.

Was in this position as a teenager and it was an absolute nightmare as I had 3 horses of my own and they were my life. I felt really guilty I made T so ill but no matter how much I scrubbed myself clean and no matter how many times I changed my clothes he would still have asthma attacks, his eyes would stream and he'd generally become all red and puffy whenever I was near. The crunch came when my mum came to pick me up from his house and our mothers were chatting. His mum said "well if they want to be together she'll just have to give up horses" although it was a jokey comment I could never give up my horses and consequently 6 years on my horses are still about but I have no contact with T.

I was however very young and am in no way saying this will happen to you and your OH

I myself have an extreme intolerance to fur but have found with regular doses of piriton I am fine around horses, just not cats or dogs lol! It is true that over time your body will develop an immunity to whatever causes the allergy and hopefully your OH won't mind putting up with the nasty side effects in the meantime!

Good Luck

We don't live together though, so a bit easier. He doesn't come round my house, and I always wash really well and wear clean clothes when I see him.

Tell him to go to the doctors about it, my OH had injections in his spine *ouch* which have helped a lot.

My OH is allergic to the neddies, although not as bad as yours.
Sounds like your doing all you can.
I have the outdoor clothes in one place and non-horsey clothes are well seperated.
He doesn't get in my car, if were going out we use his..
As allready suggested you could give him a priton but, I can't think of anything else that might help.

My OH has ecxema & asthma too - I had to shower & change after seeing horse as it would bother him badly. However he has become almost totally resilient to it now & I can sit next to him iin my smelly clothes all day & it doesn't affect him in the slightest!
Hopefully your OH will find this happens too. Make sure you keep an inhaler on hand though!!

My hubby is allergic too. He does his best and we get round it by not allowing 'horsey' things in the house-only the kitchen. Mine and bubs horse clothes get washed as soon as we are done with them and not mixed in with any of his. He has become more tollerant. When we first met 10 years ago he was so bad that I had to choose him or the horse!

ive suffered all my life with asthma and eczema, badly at times, i use to hop on my lil pony with hands bandaged, eyes so swollen couldnt see where pony was goin, so drugged up on antihistomine that could barely stay awake!!!! am better as got older, but still have to take anti'h's and strap my inhaler to me when out on the xc course!!! I do find that my allergies are less with my own horses, that am use to, and i seem to have some tolerance to my own, if i look after other peoples i seem to react more!!!

1 of my work colleagues is highly allergic to animal hair and she carries an autoeject combo pen with her at all times. To play safe, I never touch her, never sit on her chair, and we never hang our coats on the same rack as she could pick up horse hairs of me or my clothing.

because of my asthma if i dare touch my face after bein with the horses a swell up i get a rash from horse slavers and it make me very wheezy and hav had asthma attacks while ridin, bt well i love the dumb animals to giv up lol

So is mine as well! He takes a puffer twice a day and I think the doctor has given him something to take. We are just really careful and try to keep contact to a minimum, wash hands etc, but its hard as he loves the horse.

My OH is too, and he has worked with them for nearly 30 years! he takes antihistamines when it gets bad but the problem is not as bad as many mentioned here. I also suffer from asthma and have to be careful with dogs and cats but fortunately not affected by horses.

I suffer with asthma and eczema and always have, am allergic to horses, dogs and cats (anything with fur basically) but I have them all! I find I build up an immunity although I still have good days and bad days. I think though some people have more violent reactions tahn others (i have a friend who just has to be near a horse hair and she'll get wheezy and that's when she doesn't knwo it's there so it's not psychological). You may find after a while h ewill build up an immunity so it may be a case of suffering for a bit before this happens.

If I go near a strange horse or dog I can react badly but once I have got used to that particular animal I can control it. Maybe he needs to see his doctor to check the medication he has is adequate and yes piriton helps a lot but I find it also send me to sleep rather quickly so isn't always the ideal solution!

My husband suffers from asthma and eczema as well but he has built up a tolerance to my horses and our cats and dog. However he isnt great round other people's animals, lorries or at indoor shows. We had a really scary incident last year at a 3 day show in Cavan when he almost ended up in hospital!
We have a jeep to tow with but he drives it to work so I just have to make sure that it's cleaned out after every use, that i dont leave numhahs etc lying round the house and that I do all "horsey" washing when he is at football lol!
He will get better but it will take a wee while
