This morning my old boy slipped over and fell down when exiting his stable on an angle, plus the rubber matting at the doorway was a bit wet. He was in a silly mood, very alert, active, weaving etc - acting like a 4 year old and not going on 27!
He managed to get up (3rd or 4th attempt on the wet concrete in the yard – I managed to place an old NZ rug down and I think that aided him plus I gave him a bit of a push. He has no hind shoes on which probably makes it more slippery to get up. I checked him over and over and left him tucking in the some horsehage (he’s normally feed normal hay) but on this occasion he had a treat to take his mind off things. He seemed fine as if nothing had happened.
I checked him at lunch time and again this evening and had no report from the YO who feeds my boys which is good. He’s on a couple of pain-killers for a few days as he is bound to be sore/bruised as advised by my vet. I also put 2 bales of shavings in his stable - the area around the doorway is completely covered which normally I only sweep the area as the shaving end up outside which usually happens. He always has a deep shavings bed (not deep litter) as I don’t like my boys on the matting with few shavings!
I’m now wondering if I should have the hind shoes put back on as he has never fallen/slipped like this before despite the rubber matting being a bit wet; should I change the rubber matting in the doorway as the current matting has a smooth type finish. Could anyone recommend matting with a textured grip finish. Do I put some textured matting outside the doorway in the yard, but the wet weather could make it really slippery. My boys have their stable doors open (all the time) and have access to the yard so they can keep mobile (when they are not in the field).
He’s a bit of a weaver when shut in and his neighbour next door likes to box walk when shut in! I will now make sure that shavings are always at the doorway from now on. Do you have any other suggestions? Many thanks.

No suggestions but glad he's ok

Its that kind of weather and horses and humans are falling over quite regularly at the moment.

If you can put down something to give traction like a bit of sand, (grit but fat chance), that should help whilst everything is slimey. Shoes on the rear would only have helped if you'd had new ones or roads studs in.

He hates being out in the winter mode - after 2-3 hours he's had enough and decides to gallop around screaming his head off whilst re-arranging the field and comes in sweating buckets! In his summer mode his field is right next to his stable so he can please himself.

Our old Clyde xShire once went down splat in the field after it had rained on frozen ground

She was well into her 20;s at the time and apart from being a bit sore suffered no ill effects, unlike my ex who was leading her in at the time! He tried to hold up half a ton of horse and while failing in that task, pulled a whole host of muscles in his neck and shoulder

Not much any of us can do in this weather, but shavings in the doorway might be a good idea for a while.

Yes, check with your vet and give him a 'bute/Danilon in case he's feeling a bit stiff tomorrow. If he banged a part of his leg it'll help just to keep swellings down. If he's not right in the morning call the vet again and if you need, have him checked over. He may well be stiff for a couple of days. Hope no lasting damage done.
