I am at work, and two of my liveries have just called me to say they are hacking my horses out (which is fine) but they decided to 'explore' and are now lost in the woods!

I have no idea how they are lost, but they have no idea of where they are. I have told them to retrace their steps but they said they have been doing that for ages and got no-where!!! They have been out for 2 hours now.

Any tips? I dont want my poor ponies to be stranded! What to do what to do what to do?!

Which woods are they lost in? Have they got torches with them? I guess if they've been going round in circles for a while they should keep going straight until they find some sort of marker. Can they hear any traffic they could move towards?

MM that is exactly what I told them to do.

Pookie I dont think they have torches! All of our hacking is off road so no roads to hear - now cant get hold of them becasue of no signal which is a good sign as we dont have signal close to home.

I have no idea how they have got so lost, but they are! I have told them if the worst comes to the worst find a yard and I will come to collect them with the lorry when I finish work.

How on earth they have managed to get lost is beyond me!

If they can tell through the cloud or have some sun, if they have an analogue watch, hold it horizontal point the hour hand to the sun.

South is then half way between the hour and the twelve o'clock mark on the watch so if it is nearly five o'clock, point the 5 on the watch face at the sun and south would about behalf way between the 2 and 3 o'clock positions.

Then if you know roughly the correct direction to head to get out of the woods, (you could look on Google for the woods to your yard and tell them the direction to head in, remembering that East will be to the Left of South and West is to the Right, then they should at least be able to get going in the correct direction towards the yard, and hopefully will find somewhere they recognise

Surely they must have come across a farm or somewhere that they could ask directions - or await rescue?

I have just heard from them, and they know where they are (phew!)

I still cannot figure out HOW they got lost!

Hopefully ponies will find their way home, it happened to me when I was a reckless teenager (got lost in the woods riding a friend's horse, I was on my own and mobile phones hadn't been invented yet) and I just left him to it and the little star brought me home safe and sound.

Otherwise, agree with hanandhen, there's GOT to be a farm or a house at some point!
