On Saturday when I bought my pony in from the field I noticed that his muzzle had gotten rather dry and his hair was a little stubbly as though it had grown back just after shaving, and I was joking that I was going to have to start moisturizing his nose.

He stayed out last night as it was dry, but when he came in today it has gone all freckly and where he is usually a dark bay it has gone much lighter and closer to a whitish grey :s Mum had a feel and said that it was smoother and that it felt like the hair was gone... Does anyone know what this could be? Feeling a little worried about it now, as it looks a little like a rash, has anyone seen anything like this before?

Does it look like bad sunburn hun? Sunburn starts by damaging the hair on the horse's muzzle, then the skin itself is damaged - pink skin will look red and angry - then finally the surface layer of skin is damaged enough that it starts to weep and ooze and the muzzle will be covered in crusty sores with dried blood. If it is sunburn, aloe vera gel or plain calamine lotion will soothe the skin but the horse will need regular applications of Factor 50 sunblock or a face mask with UV nose guard when/if he goes out in strong sunlight. An alternative is to stable the horse in the daytime. If it is sunburn and it is the first time your horse has ever had it, you might need to investigate a little further as to why it has only just started.

No there aren't any buttercups, but it does look like a reaction to something... I will have another look at it this morning, I guess it could be sunburn but he hasn't had it before (he's 17) in the 6 years we've had him - but as I said will check and have a proper look at it today, and have a look for those signs and see if it's got better or worse from being in last night.

it is rust on the grass which is doing it? If so, your boots will have red dust on them adn possibly his feet will too. Rust is a fungus that grows in grass in nice weather and can sometimes upset the skin. Nothing really to do about it, though i am sure some aloe vera gel will help!

This is EXACTLY what Dexter has. He is a dark bay and is going pinky white in patches over his muzzle and around his eyes. I had the vet and he said its vitiligo, where the immune system attacks the melanin pigment in the skin. He prescribed Betnovate steroid cream and it seems to have stopped it spreading. The patches on his eyelids have nearly gone ... He warned me to use a good sun BLOCK not cream on it.
