Thanks for all your replies, I fetched him in for the night and with no cream or treatment his muzzle is lots better, he has been in the plenty of grass with lots of buttercups field today, if it's flared up again and bad in the morning I am going to throw away his straw bedding and put new in, as that is the only thing that has changed in the equasion, thanks again for everyones interest.

For those that wanted to know how to fit the tights on the nose, I will try and do a video and post later this week as it is difficult to type it all out, I have done it before but annoyingly cant my posting :(
 
A friend's horse reacted like this to buttercups. I wold see if you can keep him away from them for a while. It's unlikely to be the straw: the positioning of the damage is like areas that would be affected as he's grazing.
 
I'd be checking the bare field for giant hogweed. I cannot see that there would be anything in any straw to cause that reaction. But no doubt time will tell.
