I had a phone call from the old boy that owns field this morning to say that the horses had got out in to the rest of the field, so I said not worry and that I was going up at lunchtime, was at Colraine watching SJ until then, My mates OH dropped me up there as I was going to ride at about 2, Bear was still in the top paddock and he neighed at me which he never does. The other 2 had gone under the fence but Bear won't cos he's a good boy. I said hello to him and he started walking towards me and he was crippled in pain, poor boy could hardly move. I opened up the fence so he hobbled out. I checked his legs/feet etc and there was no sign of pain so I thought right it must be his back so when I took his rug off he freaked which he never does. I had a good poke and prod on his back and couldn't find any sore spots, luckily my mates OH was still up there with me. I decided to trot him so i jogged backwards watching him and then I noticed this on his shoulder..

I just broke down in tears. I rang my mate to hurry and come up. I really dont know what he's done. It really hurts him to touch it, thats why he jumped when I took his rug off. Ive put him in but, I dont know if that was the best thing or not? I bathed it with a cold wet sponge. I dont think he would of appreciated having a heavy rug squashing it. He's had some arnica and bute. And then Ive rubbed aloe cooling gel and m.r muscle rub on it but it was lumpier 2 hours ago than it was at 2 pm. What do think it could be? All I can thing is that he's been galloping about cos the other 2 got out and fallen and landed on a rock or something? They are forever pulling rocks off the hedge!

Have I done the right thing by keeping him in? I cant stop crying, I feel so sorry for him. Please help and work out what the hell he's done, should I get a vet out?

Could it be an abcess???? Looks a funny place for anything else.... have a look for a puncture wound and if you see anything then bathe it with hot water....

Poor boy

I'd definately get a vet out hun, looks like it could be a reaction to something......either way he probably needs something for it x

3rd pic makes it look like a hoof kick - front of hoof facing left (do you see it?)

Poor dude, he needs anti-inflams, so if you don't have any I would get some from vet.

Now you mention it - think it might be a kick. Thought that he'd have a cut but then forgot they're all rugged still.....

He's only in with my welsh A and the foal, and Ive never seen either of them kick, we did think of that but I really dont think they would have. Its all bumpy and hard, he can walk on but he's limping, its just really sore to touch.

He's been wearing a cotton vest under his rug, maybe it could be that? He wore it last winter when he was clipped too, have I done the right thing to keep him in? I gave him bute in his tea, I'll go up 1st thing tomorrow and see what I'll have to do

The fields electric but the old boy turned it off this morning as he sold his caravan and had to go out through my field, Bear never goes near the fence whether its on or off.

Magic Magpie would your horse let you touch it? When I 1st touched it he nearly fell over.

Bloody typical OH booked the week off especially so I could have a week of riding, and we were meant to be going to the last hunt on Tuesday! And having his teeth done on Wednesday!!

More than capable of delivering a hefty kick then (not saying it was deliberate, could be a unlucky blow when having a hoon around). Is his tetanus up to date??

Still looks like a big haematomas to me.

I agree, either that or a kick.

I would get the vet out tomorrow if the lump is still there or if he is still sore. But I do think you have done the right thing to keep him in, try not to worry too much as it doesnt look like it is too bad.

Fingers crossed he is feeling better soon.

It could be some sort of heat/ sweat rash. Have had some horses with something similar. They go through the roof when you touch it. Starts as raised lumps then little scabs form in a few days.

My girl had a kick in exactly the same place last year that made her very lame, it came up as more of a tennis ball size though and developed into a haematoma, which did eventually go, i bathed in cold water like you said and put arnica on it.
I called the vet the next day who also gave her some bute and because she was in full work obviously she needed box rest because she was in so much pain and hobbled around alot..!
Vet recommended physio, and so she had two sessions a week for about 2-3mths, shes right as rain now thank goodness.
I would def get vet out if i were you, better to be safe than sorry..fingers crossed and i hope its nothing more than a kick with a bit of bruising

He wasn't limping as bad after I took his rug off, I think there must of been alot of pressure on it, I couldn't see anythin inside or out of his rug/vest. I wish horses could talk!

He would have been galloping round like an idiot when the other 2 escaped so he might have got hot and sweaty or wiped out on a rock next to the crappy cornish hedges, Ive got a friend who's very knowledgeable coming up in the morning to give me her opinion, and then I'll go from there, Im 100% sure that he hasn't been kicked, Bertie hasn't got big enough feet for that, and where it is surely it would need to be a bigger horse and foot?

I would say your emergency first aid is ok. Reasses in the morning, tell the vet how you have treated it and ask his advice.

Phone the vet for advice when they are open tomorrow, they don't charhge for a phone call.

Have you noticed any 'flying insecty' type things yet??? With all the rain we have had a 'pool' of water could have formed and stagnant water attracts mozzie types. Winter was'nt really harsh enough to kill them off.
