My Poor Baby... **PICTURES**

I haven't noticed any flying things, its high up where he is kept and open, Im so glad that I went up this afternoon and not 1st thing as he would have been like it all night.

The horse in the background of the pictures is another livery, you have to go through his field and stable to get to bears! encase you all think im off my trolley and that he is in with a big horse with shoes on LOL! God Ive got a really bad headache from stress!!

Looks like a haematoma to me too.( this is basically a very bad bruise - the swelling is blood under the skin) Our youngster managed to get a couple of these, once right on his hip. I would get the vet out to be sure. I can't remember what the treatment was, but he soon returned to normal.
We were never sure how Odds had done this, but we think he could have rolled on a rock, or run into a fence post!

Poor horse.
I think it's a kick/fence injury haematoma, and I'd get the vet for NSAIDs. I'd be quite careful tbh because there isn't a huge amount of muscle over the point of the shoulder so it can become damaged quite easily. I wouldn't turn him out either tomorrow, until a vet has seen him

Wishing him a speedy recovery.

A vet would give you the advice to keep him in,maybe walk him in hand depending on how sore/lame he is,i would give him 2 bute per day for a few days keep him on boxrest and then remove the evening bute and show him to the vet the following morning,if he is still lame
It does look as if it is smack right on the muscle above/near the shoulder which might be why he is so sore to walk, looks more as if he has bumped into something.I would also smear on some staysound to keep any swelling down and since there is no broken skin !
Good Luck

i think you have done everything you possibly can and it sounds like you have done a very good job with it. I would get the vet out in the morning though as it needs to get checked.

Im glad I did the right thing in keeping him in, you never know what the best thing is to do, if he's in he isn't moving about but atleast he's not out in the cold wet mud, he's in straw thats about 2ft deep!! I'll get friends opinion in the morning but I think we are all on the same conclusion! Thank you so much for all your replies, its rested my mind a bit!
What would I do without HHO! This was the 1st thing I did when I got home from the yard.
My friend who keeps hers up there (horse in background) said he was banging stable door earlier so maybe the butes helping.

This may sound strange but does it make a noise if you brush gently your hand over it? if it does get vet immediately as could be a trachea injury from a kick to the windpipe.

My horse got kicked a few years back and had this type of look to it, as it was escaped air....from windpipe but injury had been internal and no outward wound.

Dont mean to panic you but if it is this then sometimes the would crackles "the brown paper effect" they call it as its air...

Do get it checked out if horse seems at all off colour.

Thank you! I wouldn't of coped if I didn't have 3 very good friends there to hold me up LOL! Im awful with things like this, even if my daughter hurts herself I'll pass her to someone else, I hate seeing people/animals in pain. I cant cope. I let him have a munch on grass when I 1st got there and when I held his head up he pawed the ground cos he wanted to eat, I was panicking thinking his bone was sticking out!!

*and breath!*

Are his shoulders always that different in size? It looks as if it could be a dislocation of the shoulder and I would get the vet out asap.

He would only let me touch it very gently so I dont know, I'll try in the morning, he wouldn't let anyone else go near it without trying to run back, but the lady who's coming up in the morning is the person that bred him and sold him to me so hopefully he'll trust his old mummy too!

I wasn't stood right in front of him. I was at an angle when I took piccies.
Dont spose you want to have a look?!!

Just a possible alternative- I had some of my horses come out in large, lumpy rashes that looked very similar to this. They were burning hot, obviously very painful to touch ( one couldn't be ridden as the swelling spread over his shoulder) and when settled caused flaking and the hair to fall out. The only conclusion (after much veterinary attention and elimination of stuff like changes in feed, washing powder etc) was it was some form of rain scald, as it towards the end of the very soggy summer last year, and the rash typically appeared where rain would run down the neck and under the rug onto the shoulders.

God I hope he hasn't fractured his shoulder too! I thought if he's still putting weight on it I'll give him bute and muscle rub etc.. and see how he went, Im really worried now!

Looks like a kick to me; either that or he has fallen over on rocky ground. However he did it doesn't really matter, you'd still have to treat it the same with anti-inflammatories and keep an eye out for any infection.

Haematomas can take a long time to go down. My little Arab mare was pivotted over a fence by some yearlings and she had a horrendous amount of oedema on her chest. It took about 8 months for the swelling to go down however it was way worse than your little guys injury.

It looks like a kick to me. They can swell up quite alarmingly! Why not ring the emergency vet number (horses always do these things at weekends!) and get some advice to put your mind at rest. I am sure you have done all the right things.

Oh yes. Horses are capable of injuring themselves wherever they are - stoopid animals.

The little mare in my photo is good as new now, so it just takes time for the oedema to go down.

One of my other horses was kicked on the shoulder like yours and he suffered trauma down his leg, which ended up popping out of his coronet band, so again keep an eye out for this happening. Hopefully your boys healing will be straight forward though.

I agree with PiebaldSparkle - looks like a haematoma, vet may not do anything to start with just some antibiotics and maybe bute.

Looks like a kick to me especially as it is kind of foot shaped. Don't panic. Cold hose for 20 mins twice a day if you can. Give a sachet of bute once a day for a couple of days. Rest up. If no improvement or gets worse then get the vet.

Good luck x

I don't understand why you didn't get the vet today.... I hope he hasn't fractured his shoulder

That's kind of what I was alluding to ...hence 'don't turn him out' as there could be bone damage/fracture at the point of the shoulder which may/may not have a good outcome.
Sorry, Sophie221, don't mean to worry you
frown.gif
but any horse that's in so much pain as you have described (suddenly lame in walk, won't let you touch injury) would really benefit from a vet visit.

The vet will be out in the morning, I was going to today but I thought I'd give it a chance and see what happened. I just worry im going to be told really bad news. He's only 4 1/2 and he's my pride and joy. I love him dearly. I keep crying, its awful!

Ive got to pull myself together! You have all been so lovely and helpful. Thank you. I dont think Im going to sleep very well tonight.

Sophie, please try not to worry. Broken bones at this sight are highly unlikely and your horse would be incredibly unlucky to have suffered such an injury. In both of the injuries my horses had, yes I did have the vet come out, however this was simply a "check up" well after the events as my vet was 4 hours away both times. I spoke to him on the phone when the injuries first occurred and was told to give both of them bute and leave them out. Oedema is not something which should be kept still - the animal should be able to move freely in order to help disperse the fluid under the skin.

Hope all turns out well and yes a vet visit tomorrow would be a good idea just to be on the safe side.

I just feel bad now that I didnt get the vet out today. What if he's even worse tomorrow? I think I need to go to bed with some sleeping pills! anyone got any spare?!!

If he is worse tomorrow then he will be a normal horse
smile.gif
. He will feel stiff and tender for a number of days afterwards and then healing should begin.

There is no point in getting yourself all worried; there is nothing can be done until tomorrow and he isn't likely to keel over and die overnight
wink.gif
, so chill, girlie. He'll survive until tomorrow. Stop worrying!

Like most others have said, definitely get a vet to look at it, no matter how 'horsey' someone is it's always best to get the advice of a professional.
Also if you are calling the vet out tmrw then don't give him any more bute until after he has been seen as you won't get a true reflection of how sore he is.

ETS: I hope it isn't anything serious
smile.gif

Looks like a good hard kcik to me too - you can pretty much even see the shape of the hoof. The swelling I would suspect is a haematoma - is it soft and squishy? If so - and there's no underlying damage to the shoulder - it should slowly resolve and re-absorb over the next few weeks.

It's not going to help much now but if a horse is that lame then get the vet out straight away. It does make me cross having been the owner of a horse that broke his leg twice (once looked just like that - he had fractured his tibia) and I just can't imagine waiting to see if it got better on it's own. I'd rather spend the money to be told it is nothing than wait 24 hours to find out it is something serious. I hope that in this case it is nothing.
