My poor boy, warning - pics of wound before and after stitches

Thank you again everyone, he doesn't have any clips on door, water buckets or anything like that. I have been all around his stable and not found anything obvious that he could have done it on. I felt sick when I read about scissors/knife. He is friendly but not overly. Only really with people he knows. YO lives on site too. It's going to stay a mystery unfortunately but the main thing is he is on the mend and yes, the vet did a wonderful job on the stitches and called this morning to see how he is doing.

I felt sick when I saw him, and just cried. He is getting better and less swelling everyday and it being very pampered by my friends at the stables, they are really looking after him while I am on shift and have been wonderful

Have you got any baler twine or haynets in the stable? I have seen similar injuries when a mare got her lip caught in a loop of baler twine that was used to tie to and as she tried to free herself it twisted so got tighter so she ripped herself free.:(

oh dear my immediate thought was barb wire but as you think it could be a new horse...teeth not smashed obvioulsy. But pre and post stiching looks like your vet did an excellent job and brave horse too for sensitive muzzle. Hope it heals soon.

I think OP said he did it in stable as she'd brought him in to be safe.

OP are you sure there's no nails/wood sticking out ? Vet has done a great job

There was a pony on my yard once who came in with his head from just below his ear at the front wripped off across his face with the flap hanging, vet did a great job with that, don't know how that was done, very freak accident

The pics look like it had only just happened, very strange

yes he was in his stable, I've been round it so many times and there's def nothing he could have done it on. It was fairly fresh when he was found but the vet said it was very contaminated with hay/straw and dirt it may not heal but I have everything crossed for him.

pics taken 2 days later - swelling has gone down loads and he is very impatient now that he is being kept in so he's back to his normal self other than the injury

That's a beautiful stitching job and a lovely clean wound, the photos 2 days later look great. A couple months' time and you won't notice it at all.

Wow, that's some wound, poor boy! 2nd day pics look "good", the first picture was quite hard to tell actually for a second.

Ouch!! Poor boy!! It looks like it's healing well and like many others have said, the vet has done a fantastic job!

Lots of healing vibes heading your way :)

Gosh, that looks terribly sore, but your vet has done an amazing job!! Wishing your boy a speedy recovery. xx

I saw a horse with an identical injury few years back. He had one of those rubber stable guards across his door and was rubbing his head and got nose caught in the clip and pulled away. Looked horrific just like your boy. Stitched it up well but although it looked to be healing the lump of flesh just dried up and fell off. Don’t panic though, although he now has a bit of a dent where his nostril should be he looks just fine! What was worse was another horse on same yard that while being tacked up got his bit caught in the anti weave grill... pulled away and nearly cut his tongue off!!! He also went on to make a full recovery once the vet mended him. You can wrap them in cotton wool but horses always seem to find a way to self harm!!

Yes, the vet was amazing, so calm and gentle with him. I think he felt this because he was so good for her. She even called on Sunday morning to see how he was.

What a mess the first pic is then what a fab job after. I too would`ve been very upset seeing this, but it looks like it will heal well. Just got to keep it clean. Poor baby. x

The vet said to leave it unless it looks like it's weeping. I've given it a clean and managed to get the hay etc that was stuck to it off. He was such a good boy when he let me do it. Just stood there and let me get on with it. He's totally shocked me as thought he would have been a total nightmare

Had to have the vet out again today as some of the stitches had come away overnight. She has said that there is no point opening it up again as most of it looks like it is healing well but he is definately going to lose part of his nose :( She has removed the stitches that she could (that weren't attached to anything) and has given more antibiotics and bute and now some cream to put on it too. I am gutted for him but at least it's not affecting his breathing and he is normal in himself.

Thanks for the update on your poor boy. I've been thinking about him a lot. Hope he starts to heal quickly now.
