Our Lurcher was run over on Monday morning, he jumped over a fence and ran straight into the road. He was at work with my husband, so not our garden fence. Someone seen the accident and said they were amazed he got up! Husband took him straight to the vets and he has been very lucky and suffered cuts and bruises and we were told to watch him for 24hrs. He had a reaction to the Metacam and ended up with bloody coloured diahrea which scared me to death as I was thinking internal injuries, so I took a sample to the vets and they said to stop the meds and watch him for a further 24hrs. He does seem better, his bandages are off and hes pretty much himself mobility wise but hes so quiet, hes going to the toilet normally now and to be honest as a Lurcher, he is normally laid back and quiet but he has lost his spark. Husband said hes bound to feel like this as hes had a massive shock but I cant help worrying.
Would you say its normal for him to be like this?
Thanks for reading

He's probably feeling very sore at the moment and a bit sorry for himself. If he's moving ok, going to the loo, and eating and drinking I would try not to worry too much, just let him have some quiet time and keep an eye on him. I'm sure he'll bounce back in no time.

Sorry to hear about your lurcher, mine's like a wet bar of soap, she's so quick and out the door if your not careful onto the road as visitors simply will not shut the flipping gate behind them, dog's are a constant worry aren't they.
I imagine that your dog is feeling very sorry for himself and withdrawn, not to mention being very bruised so don't be surprised he's lost his sparkle. If you have any concerns a phone call to the vet will help put your mind at rest, Oz

^^^^ what they've said. He was v lucky! My ESS was run over by a transit van years ago, when he was less than a year old-he was ok,made a full recovery but was extremely withdrawn for a few days. Big shock combined with pain really knocks them up for a bit. Get well soon little man.

Coursing dogs are the most resilient, I promise you!! They bounce back from the most horrendous tumbles, generally!

Your dog WILL be stiff, and sore, and he WILL ache for a few days, but if he still walks unaided, he WILL live. That's a promise! ;):D

He needs a few days of box/bed rest, it seems to me. Don't push him, allow him to come around in his own good time.

Bloody dogs, and the worry that they bring us!:D

Alec.

Awww thank you, youve made me feel so much better. I know it wasnt the drivers fault, he wasnt expecting 37kg large dog to run out in front of him but he just drove off which makes me mad. Talking of weight, Boris is a bit porky at the mo but we are thinking that it may have actually helped him by padding him out a bit :)
It was awful when my husband phoned, he was almost in tears, I rushed to the vets to meet him and Boris walked over to me with little tail wag, I was so relieved.
Thanks again.

Get a spring for your gate, then you don't have to worry ;)

What she said! ^^

A 37kg lurcher? Heavens, what's his mix?!

Vibes for a super quick recovery for the boy. :)

And thank you all for being so kind, I was dreading, bad owner, irresponsible etc etc. I dont come in here as often as I should, you are all lovely :)

Louby,

that is a handsome dog. The second pic, that's just lovely. A seriously handsome dog. Does he still have his nadgers? Put to a greyhound bitch, they would be appealing pups.

Alec.

I really didn't want to open this post incase it was bad news.

Glad he's ok-ish. Bless his little face in the xmas hat photo :)

Lots of TLC and I'm sure in a few days when he's feeling a bit better he'll be milking all the attention he can ;)

Thanks Alec, we think hes gorgeous but then hes our baby so we would lol
Yes hes got his bits :D but I dont think he knows what they are for, one of the reasons hes kept them :D

Yeah because of course we dont have too many unwanted lurchers in this country at all do we? And hell, what is wrong with a bit of indiscriminate breeding from a greyhound, there are hardly any of those about in rescue kennels either....

Brace yourselves, one and all, another zealot!

Without us indiscriminate breeders, what on earth would you do, and how would you manage to feel quite so righteous?

Alec.

how lucky was he, prob a bit of shock making him quiet, im sure he will soon be ok....but what a stunning looking dog, reminds me of my old deerhound. sadly nolonger with us....

Oh gosh you are so amusing arent you (well, no you arent, but I'm sure you think you are so I wont spoil your little dream)

I am not a zealot by any means, just someone who spends a great deal of time fund raising to deal with the aftermath of idiots like you.

Hugs to you, I know how awful you must feel. My ESS ran straight out in front of a van last year when he was about 6 months old, I heard the thud and screech of brakes and was convinced I was going to find a dead dog in the road but the next thing I knew he came limping back to me with his tail between his legs. A night at the vets, some painkillers and a few days rest and he was back to normal and has no lasting effects. To this day I feel guilty though, I think he got muddled when he popped back out of a hedge and ran the wrong way, he was in the road before I could whistle :( Im sure your lad will be fine after a day or two, he is probably a bit sore and bruised and bound to feel a bit out of sorts.

What a seriously lovely looking dog, really hope with lots of tlc he's soon feeling much better, but if you're feeling like bad owners stick a stamp on his bottom and send him to me!?

Awww thanks everyone again for being so kind and for you well wishes. Hes still quiet and sleeping at the mo but today he did his usual barking when someone knocked on the door, hes not been bothered since Monday so Im hoping hes on the mend :)
