I was playing fetch with Brochan on Tuesday and he somehow managed to split the stopper pad on his front left leg open. :( I had thrown the ball and he was coming back with it when he stopped and lifted his leg. As I went over to him, he lay down, and I could see his pad was split right down the middle and there was quite a bit of blood. He never yelped or anything and didn’t seem too stressed about it, but then again, his adrenaline levels were probably up and he didn’t really feel it. Anyway, I immediately phoned my Mum’s partner to come and pick us up, then I got an emergency appointment at the vet. We got there and he needed to be stitched under heavy sedation. That took just over an hour, and when he came out, he just looked so helpless. Staggering about as if he were drunk and in need of a big hug. We got him home with a big blue bandage, a buster collar (if need be), antibiotics, and Metacam. For the rest of the day, he just looked really sorry for himself and wondering why he was hobbling around. He was brighter on Wednesday, but he can only walk for something like five minutes before he slows down to a snail’s pace. Then, he’s glad to get home. He’s got another appointment on Friday to get his bandage changed, so please send positive thoughts his way. Many thanks. :)

I was also wondering how harmful his licking the bandage could be. Anytime he’s been seen doing it, he’s been stopped, but we don’t want him to think he’s being told not to lick at all. So, is it okay for him to lick the bandage? He has never made an attempt to chew it and his buster collar is put on when he’s not supervised. Any advice on this will be greatly appreciated.

I won't bother offering any advice because it clearly won't be of any value to you.

I would like to say though that I hope your pooch gets better very soon and back to normal self!! :)

I don't know how you think our disagreement on the RSPCA thread will affect my getting your opinion on this. I just want to know if it's safe for him to lick his bandage.

Thank for your get well wishes. :)

Hi - so sorry to read about Beautiful Brochan's injury: my lurcher was hurtling round in circles on the common and managed to cut one of her toes through the joint! Eeek!, she has had an operation under GA and is recovering well. But . . . she is now the mistress of the gloomy stare and the infinitely slow walk - when she wants to! She has licked her bandage occasionally. It hasn't been a lot. There are various anti-lick/chew products you can buy from places like Pets at Home and general pet/ feed stores. I used a push up stick of solid ointment which stopped her having a determined go at taking her protective dog boot off!
Hope B the B is ok soon. Try not to worry too much, although easier said than done.

It shouldn't do too much harm if he licks it. My young dog has slashed or stabbed his pads a few times now (idiots smashing glass at the beach), I just use spray plaster now and rest him as he'd just eviscerate anything I put on him. Hope he is on the mend soon and try not to feel too sorry for him, mine totally milks any injuries he has, I swear I saw him limp on the wrong leg last time!!

I also dont quite understand the question but if it helps licking the bandage will be a prelude to chewing and the fact the bandage will get wet may impede healing or help set up an infection. If your dog has the buster collar on they wont be able to lick it, with it off you telling him to stop it will not affect his licking in the future.

Hope it heals quickly and he is back to hooning around as normal.

There are alternatives to the buster collar which you can buy over the internet.

Good grief, you have a lurcher and he didn't scream his head off??!! He must be a proper tough nut ;)

If he has his buster collar and supervision the rest of the time I don't see a problem.

Lots of healing vibes - my JRT X is well 'ard until she damages a paw (which is reasonably frequent); at such times she needs ridiculous amounts of TLC and cuddles.

i gave up having my lurchers pads stitched or dressed (with the blessing of my vet) as the pads heal quicker if left, get some bitter apple spary to spray on dressing you can spray it directly onto a wound too, to stop them licking. it has been a god send with my lurcher

I've never taken mine to the vet for a split pad, naughty me! Also, a Chinese takeaway tray is brilliant if you need to dunk the paw in antiseptic or saline solution.

Between that and the spray plaster/antiseptic, takes all the conflict out of treating the wound.

My very many thanks for all your hints, tips, and very thoughtful wishes for Brochan. :D Will look for the sprays in Pets at Home tomorrow when he gets his bandage changed. I'll also look into the other things that were suggested. The antiseptic bath sounds good for when he is bandage free. Will let you know how he gets on.

Thanks again. :)

Yikes! Right through the joint That MUST have hurt! I'm really glad to hear she is making a good recovery. :) It was raining today (well technically yesterday), so I wrapped a couple of plastic bags around his bandage to keep it dry. He already wears a really tough plastic bag when he's outside, but the extra bags meant he was slower than ever. Bless him.

I have been worried about him not healing properly, etc, but am trying to stay positive. :)

Nope, there wasn't a peep out of him. On one of his walks last week, he stuck his head in some bushes for a sniff, and let out a rather loud yelp. Checked him over and he looked fine. This, however, didn't even necessitate a little groan.

And there's nothing wrong with lots of hugs and TLC. :)

Here's an update. We went to get his bandages changed on Friday and were given a couple of choices. Either to leave the bandage off and let the wound heal itself (which would mean his buster collar staying on 24/7) or to keep bandaging it. We chose the latter as he would have been miserable having the collar on all the time. The nurse said the occasional lick would be okay and since he still hasn't made any attempt to chew, we decided not to get a spray. The bandage slipped off during his Saturday morning walk, so it was back to the nurse to get another one put on. Thankfully, it has managed to stay on. His next appointment is on Tuesday and we'll see where we go from there. Mentioned the antiseptic foot bath and the nurse thought it was a great idea for when his bandage finally comes off.
