You know sometimes i wonder if i can actually trust anyone with my horses.

I usually let my horses out at around 7am every morning before work but i end up putting everyone elses horses out as i know that some people have young children and cant always get down - which i dont mind doing as im there anyway. This morning I had to ask a yard livery to put my horses out as i had to go and put some flowers on my dads grave (its a long drive away), i left her instructions and thought that my pair would be ok as usually this woman is reliable.

Anyway i get back to the yard at around 12ish, walk to my stables and both of them are plastered in poo and well trodden (my two are normally very clean) so instantly i wonder if something has happened.

So i go to call them both up to be exercised and poor poppy just doesnt seem right. Managed to get them in and when i took her rug off i noticed that poppy has a bad cut to her back leg just above the hock. The cut is quite deep and bleeding so i called my mom and washed the wound as best i could, ended up calling the vet as it was very deep and still bleeding, Poor Poppy now has stitches!.

Anyway i called the lady who was responsible for putting them out and im told:

Both horses were not put out until 11am as the livery had wanted to stay in bed cause it was cold outside! So both of them had been left with no hay or water all morning.

She had put their rugs on, Indianas was fastened incorrectly and twisted!.

She then went on to say that while Indi was eating and Poppy had finished (he is always slower than gannet Poppy) and the lady couldnt be bothered to wait so she had loosed Poppy in to Indi's stable (you have to go through it to get out) and of course Indi has lashed out and Poppy had squeezed through Indi's half opened stable door (yes she had left it open) and gashed herself on the bolt!, she had then turned them both out without even thinking about Poor Poppy bleeding!!!

I dont even know what to think or say, one thing is certain i deffinately wont be asking anyone to do my horses again.

Gosh what a stupid woman! Such a shame some people are so unreliable! I found my poor share horse in a right state one day having been brought in from the field by a friend, I instantly thought she was colicking and went to get YO (horse was pawing, looking round at her body, and reluctant to move at all). YO said no she's not colicking but check her over - I lifted her rug and she had a massive bloody gash across her hind end! How the person bringing her in didn't notice, I'll never know.
I hope Poppy is ok!

I only trust my OH with the horses, at least i can get away with hitting him if he does something wrong lol. Im really sorry to hear about Poppy, anyone decent would have called you and tried to treat the wound, or call the vet themselves.

Why do you put other horses out? You dont seem to get any thanks back!

Poppy should be ok, its just a deep flesh wound (luckily!)

I normally wouldnt ask anyone to do my horses but sods law the only day i couldnt do them neither could my mom. The lady that put them out is usually quite trustworthy although i deffinately will not ask her again.

I always do other peoples horses as i dont like the thought of them standing in their stables with no hay etc when they could be out in the morning sunshine. Alot of the owners on our yard very rarely come down so its more of a case that if i didnt hay the grass livery horses in the winter they would starve and the ones that are in, their owners often ask me to do them anyway.

You must be pretty pee'd off! As a YO, you would not believe the amount of idiotic things people do, even those who have been around horses for years. There are only a few who I would let near my horses and they are people who I know are 'aware', if that makes sense. One girl in particular seems to know when a horse needs something - she is totally in tune with them. All I can say is that common sense isn't common. Does the YO offer a service? I would always prefer to pay for turnout rather than rely on anyone else, at least you have (hopefully) an experienced YO, and if anything goes wrong you have recourse.

Hope Poppy's cut heals quickly.
